  I think the weight would start sinking in on month 5 or so. If you happened to live past month 6 it'd really start to eat at you.

  As for the emotional aspect. There is a plan for that as well. Do something nice for your kids, grandchildren, nephews, nieces every day. Even if it is just an email congratulating them on their school play. When you leave home for work, or your spouse leaves home, tell them you love him/her. That seems like a better goodbye than living with Alzheimer's and don't even recognize your own kids.

  MB I agree. I meant preparing to die like mentioned above where families cope because someone has been battling cancer for many years. But wills and funeral arrangements are not what I meant. I try to do what you said and tell those I love that I love them every time I hang up the phone or leave the house. Never know what the day will bring, good or bad.

  I'd rather die quickly, as I wouldn't want my wife and kids to go through the mental anguish of knowing the inevitable was near. We try to keep our affairs in order as a rule, and I'm close enough with my kids that they wouldn't need closure if I was to die suddenly.

  My sister in laws uncle had a brain aneurysm about 9 months ago. It was pretty clear he wouldnt ever recover enough to live outside of a facility. The doctors though told them there was a small chance. The doctors then kept him alive with machines and transferred him to a special home. Well since Medicade doesn't kick I until you have exhausted all of your own money his family has now lost everything. Shortly after his money ran out and insurance kicked in the doctors told them there wasn't much of a chance for recovery anymore. They took him off the machines long enough so they could talk to him and he choose to go home and die. So now for the last week he is slowly starving to death while struggling to breath knowing he will have a stroke and die at any time while his family watches. I say fuck that. Sure he got to say goodbye and they made funeral plans but now his family is broke and his wife will probably lose their house.

  Last July a buddy of mine decided last minute to go with some friends to a lake in Indiana. He broke his neck/severed spine when he dove in and was pretty much incapicatated. He was alert enough to blink. Less than a day he decided to have the plug pulled on himself. He didnt want to live that way, and didnt want to put his family through it..

  No, west central ohio. The thing that really gets to you is that he hadnt planned to go. Friends called him like Friday afternoon and he was like "hell, I have nothing to do tomorrow, I will go".

  That's horrible, but unfortunately seems to happen with more frequency. It's as if Americans are living longer, but not necessarily better.

  I don't want my wife and future kids to have to feed me, bathe me, and wipe my ass all while they are piling up debt from insane medical costs just so I can have more time to say goodbye. I'd prefer to go suddenly.

  Abruptly. All farewells should be sudden. Life is too brief to spend it for any extended period of time consumed by such sorrow and grief.
  
  As nice as that two-year farewell tour sounds, I'd rather go out like a light. The bataan death march is more for the families and not the person dying. As others have questioned, what kind of life is that anyway? At least with dying suddenly, there is no -- or minimal -- physical pain and a sense of finality that I'm not sure comes with a slow, protracted death.

  In 1995 my grandfather, who I was close to, died unexpectedly of a heart attack. It was awful - first close death, first dead body I've seen at calling hours, first funeral, first time witnessing grown men weep like children. Saying that period was fucked up would be an understatement.
  
  2 day before this past Christmas my mom and dad informed me they suspected my mom had cancer. It was confirmed Stage III Ovarian cancer in January, she had surgery in February, and was given a 30% chance of survival over the next 5 years. We all could go at any moment but having the odds for the rest of your life put on a range of time is surreal. I know people will say things like make the best out of your time left, cherish each moment, etc., but overall it's a hopeless feeling. Still the beginning stages of all of this so I'm not sure which is worse, but I'm going to find out.

  I want to go quick. If I was given 1 year to live I would hate to think the shit I would do during that time period. I have thought about it quite a bit and talked with friends. It just seems if you have short time to live why not do all the shit you have been told not to do. I am not sure what all that would include but I am sure it would be better then some disease taking me out.
