IKEA furniture

Is it worth it? I've been eyeballing a computer desk but I'm kind of hesitant to drive an hour and a half only to find it be a dud.

I was just reading that most (all?) of their stuff is particle board (which I'm okay with, as long as it isn't super cheaply made).

Desk I'm looking at BTW, not that it matters:

A friend of mine is addicted to IKEA. You get what you pay for there. The higher priced stuff holds up great, but the low end stuff is shit from his experiences.

My bed frame is IKEA and I love it. It's held up great. Two IKEA coffee tables I've had have been shit though. GoChiefs is spot on.

The people I know that shop there are obsessed with the place. They love it.

I don't have anything from there, but my experience from friends is exactly what GC said.

Do they help you take the items to your car? I know you end up walking through the whole store and then you pick your tickets or whatever, but do they cart it up for you or anything? Was thinking about heading up after work one day next week and grabbing it, but I'd be by myself if I did that.

Looking at a table there for our dining room. Price is good and seemed sturdy. Going to go look at it again when I get a chance. I feel bad for dudes in this store. I know I was crying to leave as my wife was dragging me through it!

I've had particle board desks before...the desktop was VERY heavy, but I liked the solid feel. Although, sure, you're always rolling the dice on the laminate top holding together.

Or you can go old-school, buy an unfinished door (stain whatever you want) and use a couple nice file cabinets for legs :)

My TV Stand is from Ikea and was maybe 300 if I remember right but it's been awesome and have had no issues. Doesn't feel or look cheap and the drawers all work just as good now as when I bought it 4 years ago. Wouldn't hesitate to get something else from there.

Seems utilitarian enough...but I'm not a fan of the style for that price - might as well just buy a couple of card tables for less than half that total price from Walmart.

But if you care about aesthetics at all, maybe search around the internet or even rig something together yourself.

Problem is I have three monitors. I think a decent sized table would work, but I think a corner desk is more practical.

I'm using a small card table right now and it sucks because it has NO weight to it, so everything shakes when I type.

Makes sense. That just seems like a fair amount of money for what you are getting. I'd either spend a bit on something nicer, or find something that works for cheaper.
NOT recommending this, but just an example:

If you're a little handy, you might also consider just buying or having some nice wood cut for your top, and then rig a "floating" desk.

I looked at this one before. I think it's stylish and a great price. Is it sturdy enough? That's the million dollar question:

That one might work. The second one I don't think would. I'd prefer to set all three up in the corner. I'd have nowhere for my keyboard if I did that on the glass one.

It has a keyboard tray (which I hate)...otherwise I doubt the width of those tables is significantly different from the one you posted.

Anyway, all I'm saying is what you are buying looks like a cheap cardboard table, except it really isn't cheap.

The ikea one has plenty of room in the corner, so I know for sure I'll be able to set up my keyboard/mouse there.

Actually had a desk like this from there once.

After about a year or two, it started bowing really badly from me just resting my arms on it while typing. No reinforcement at all.

I'd at least encourage you to check that out before buying it.

Pretty much sums it up imo.

Something like a desk or a light or a chest that you don't care about it is ok, just use it and know if you move you're going to leave it behind. Would not use IKEA for a bed or couch. Futurama pretty much got this correct: ""Enjoy your affordable Swedish crap."
