from my understanding, there are only a few small nice parts of Rio. the rest are slums, which the Brazilian government has been attacking with military style operations to make safer for the Olympics/world cup.Laley23;1577158 wrote:Rio will be fine. Its not the whole country who is hosting it like a WC.
Thats like saying NYC will suck because Detroit went bankrupt. One city does not have anything to do with the other when it comes to the Olympics. -

I have yet to see any of those 8 photos as supposedly reported from Sochi. I guess I only look at more mainstream news media so they are a bit more reliable when it comes to not reporting completely fabricated photos (only a bit more reliable).WebFire;1577517 wrote:Wonder how much of the bad conditions we are seeing reported from Sochi are real?

There's your problem. Twitter. It's a bunch of people just repeating what they saw somewhere else. That's why I said mainstream.WebFire;1577560 wrote:I've seen 3 of them circulating Twitter.
Twitter can be good for getting early/fast information. But the problem is unless you know it's first hand information from a trustworthy source, I would be skeptical. -

Nah, it's an asterisk signifying that any "judged" events should have one as there will be heavy pressure to be kind to the Russian competitors.mucalum49;1577569 wrote:Apparently one of the rings didn't open up during the opening ceremony.

Scarlet_BuckeyeSomeone needs to help me understand something...
All these reports are reporting how the "water is undrinkable" and how you "can't get any on your face", etc. How there are "missing lightbulbs" or "not enough pillows" and "shower curtains are a luxury" etc. Apparently there's an abundance of random dogs that are running around the area, and there's a task force assigned to capture & put-down these dogs.
My question is... isn't there a committee IOC (International Olympic Committee) that's tasked with reviewing possible locations to host the Olympics like 12-20 years out in advance?! How in the WORLD was Sochi chosen to host the Olympics if all of the above noted things are valid concerns?!?!
If there's "no pillows/shower-curtains/lightbulbs/clean-water" now, then you can't tell me then that there was 12-20 years ago! So who in their right mind voted to have the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi then?!?! People (most notable the media) are acting like these shortcomings are new revelations that we didn't know/learn before. If that's the case, then who in their right might signed off on this?!
Also... everyone's talking about the $50+ BILLION dollars that was supposedly raised/spent for these Olympics... WHERE IS THAT MONEY?! I would think that Lightbulbs/pillows/shower-curtains would cost AT MOST $1 BILLION to cover all the people there. Where's the rest of the $49 BILLION being spent?!?! Reports are several Olympic buildings aren't finished, so surely it didn't all go there. -
gutCities submit a business plan for the IOC to review. Politics and bribery aside, it's less about where a country is today than where they would be in 8 years, according to the feasibility of that plan.

IOC is a shady, corrupt organization.
As for the $50 billion, Russia is a shady, corrupt organization. That money was stolen or misspent -

Basically what Mohican said. The IOC is a super-corrupt organization where really rich people determine who gets to host the Olympics by diligently working to decide which country will kiss their asses the most to show how much they want the games. And that's about it.Scarlet_Buckeye;1577582 wrote:Someone needs to help me understand something...

Like, I was reading a Yahoo column by Dan Wetzel utterly mocking the head of the IOC for him making veiled comments towards particularly the U.S. for "politicizing" the games due to things like the President not personally being there and the U.S. committee having a few gay reps like Billie Jean King in response to Russia's anti-homosexual stance. The IOC dude's statement essentially included a not-so-subtle threat that this could effect our ability to get future Olympic bids.
That tells you all you need to know about the IOC. They're more concerned about their egos than actually making sure the BEST possible choice gets to host the games. -

Yes it is. The person responsible for the torch in Vancouver is still alive. In mother Russia, ring does not open, you die.TedSheckler;1577586 wrote:Not any worse that the opening ceremonies in Vancouver when one of the four torches didn't work.
