Apple TV

Anyone have it? Thinking about getting rid of cable. The price just keeps going up more and more and I don't think it's worth it so bought an HD antenna to get local channels and it works great. But thinking about doing appletv or something like it

What are good apps for it? Any advice to watching sports and other things?

I had one. Get a Roku instead. They're vastly more flexible.

Even the old Roku I had was more flexible than my Apple TV, and I didn't even particularly like my Roku.

Depends what you want to do with it. Roku has a lot more, but you can mirror your apple products to your Apple TV.

The Roku is the deal of the day on Amazon today.

I like it, I use it to stream my desktop to my TV, and netflix. If I didnt have an apple laptop I would have gotten a roku, but the added bonus of being able to strea my phone/comp to the tv is was sold me.

This... you can stream movies, music, etc. to a Roku (from your Apple device), but you cannot mirror displays. What's nice about the mirroring, is that you can go to say, abc.com, watch a video on there, and stream it to the AppleTV. On the Roku, it has to be a video that is on your device.

Might be able to do a Chromecast, too. They're $5 off on Amazon today.

Here's a question... why is DISH such assholes, and not give access to different apps, like WatchESPN, Disney apps, etc.? Why would a major cable provider be such an asshole?

Im still pissed they don't offer Showtime Anytime...they have HBOGo which is great...but now I need some Emmy Rossum titty on demand

No. Its a free app. I guess I do need my cable provider info to watch. But I'll still have road runner, so that's not an issue.

They keep adding more and more apps (or channels I guess) to Apple TV. It's got a pretty solid lineup now, and my guess is they are finally getting some momentum behind Apple TV before eventually launching a more advanced TV product that's been long-rumored.

Just since I bought my Apple TV in October, they've added PBS, Major League Soccer, Bloomberg, Watch ABC, Crackle, and many others. To be honest, I think my favorite feature that I just started using last week is renting movies from iTunes. The library is HUGE and it doesn't like wait to download the whole movie, you can usually start watching it within minutes. I also have the NBC Sports Live Extra app on my iPhone and stream it from my phone to the TV when watching English Premiere League games. And it works so damn well that you'd never know it is streaming from a tiny phone.

Some of the features like HBO Go and Watch ESPN are useless unless you have a cable subscription so don't cancel your cable unless you have a friend or family member login (I do, I'm a huge mooch). In short, I think its worth it for MLB.tv, Netflix, and iTunes alone. Everything else is icing on the cake.

For what it's worth, none of those are exclusive to Apple TV...

If you can find a Roku cheaper, get the Roku

iTunes is, as well as the AirPlay video from an iPhone.

You can stream content already loaded on your device to the Roku. You just can't screen share/mirror.

Yes, just be careful though because some app developers block the Airplay feature in their apps for one reason or another.

Big Ten Network definitely works though as I watched several games using that method this year. The only complaint with BTN was the sound was really shitty but the picture quality was fine.

    Amazon Instant Video blocks airplay.
