  (CNN) -- Victims' families are angry and speaking out after a judge sentenced a teenager in Texas to 10 years' probation for driving drunk and causing a crash that left two people severely injured and four others dead.

  Lawyers for Ethan Couch, 16, had argued that the teen's parents should share a part of the blame for the crash because they never set limits for the boy and gave him everything he wanted.
  According to CNN affiliate WFAA, a psychologist called by the defense described Couch as a product of "affluenza."

  If the courts are going to allow this absurd argument that his parents caused this, then go all in. His parents should be doing serious time.

  I initially had 2 thoughts:
  
  1. If this were a poor black kid, they would be seeking the death penalty in Texas.
  
  2. This is a great time for a civil lawsuit. The POS parents didn't care about their kid, You can be damn sure they will care when they get the bejeesus sued out of them and force them into bankruptcy.

  Just because his defense claimed the parents were shitty doesn't make it true. He and his buddies stole the beer, so it's not like mom & dad supplied him alcohol.
  
  But the victims should absolutely use his defense to go after the parents for a civil judgement.
  
  As for jail time, the kid is 16 and this sort of stupid, irresponsible behavior happens all the time. But there should be consequences to his actions, and I think 5-yrs served on a 10-yr sentence makes sense if he gets probation for the rest due to good behavior and contrition.
  
  Or maybe I would have gone 2-yrs incarceration, where he presumably earns his GED. Then don't want to release the kid to go off to college, so some sort of work-release program for another 5 years while he earns his degree.

  I cant be bothered to read the link, but that case screams APPEAL to me.
  
  Kid should be locked up, and the parents should be tried for involuntary manslaughter.
  
  Civil cases can be brought up for wrongful death so they're broke and spending time in the slammer.

  I don't think I can blame the parents if the kid stole the beer. They didn't know he was drinking and the beer wasn't from them or was drink in their house. Sure they raised a spoiled brat who doesn't give a fuck about anyone else but there's millions of parents guilty of the same exact thing as them.
  
  The kid on the other hand should have to serve jail time. Since he is 16 I think his life can still be changed and he can become a decent member of society. For those reasons I wouldn't go full on life in prison but maybe jail until he was 21 would be good. Then have him on probation for another few years. By him getting no jail time he really just got off again and won't learn from his mistakes. The judge is now just as guilty as the parents for spoiling him.

  I think I saw the guideliness are 2-20yrs for this type of crime.
  
  He could have served as little as 2 years, and this way the judge has him walking the tight line for 10 years (at least according to his lawyer). I think he should have done some jail time, but I'm not sure this is as raw a deal as made out to be - it's a tragedy, but if this kid so much as goes near a party in the next 10 years he's going away for quite a while.
  
  From a rehabilitation perspective, I think this makes sense. From the deterrent and justice perspective, not so much.
