    This should probably go to the politics board, but I think most can agree Mandela was a champion for human rights. South Africa is a work in progress, and perhaps at times (and now) it has issues, particularly with crime...but that is an issue for future leaders.

    Mandela was not Gandhi and didn't always disapprove of violent tactics. In addition his wife Winnie (I believe they are still married, but separated) has a long criminal history. That isn't necessarily terrorism, but South Africa has a checkered background even post-apartheid, and the Mandela's profited heavily in a country that is very, very poor in most areas.

    I agree. I don't think of him as a Saint and don't agree with him politically but I do think he stood for freedom and human rights when it would have been easier to not do so.

    If you look back at many great historical figures in our own country, you will find deep flaws. Hell our country was founded by men who owned other human beings as slaves.

    What flaws does MLK have though? He might be the ultimate great guy really, just unreal the change he was able to make

    He wasn't a non-violent saint and he never claimed to be. He led the armed group within the resistence because they had been outlawed from any peaceful resistence. If a small minority holds the majority to apathied level law, the majority is reasonable to consider itself desperate and at war. Additionally, he moderated his view on using violence when the situation evolved and he was older (and probably wiser). The acts of his original group, which mainly ttok place while he was imprisoned perhaps hastened the fall of the apatheid regime.

    People are contradictions. But to use the sports radio analogy, I'll judge Mandela by his "body of work".
