So I take it you have had your fair share of kidney stones?

I've heard it's like a male giving birth

If you don't pass it yourself and they have to go get it, the first thing they do is insert a catheter. Not just any catheter…its about 1/2" in diameter because they put this robotic arm thing through it to "pick" the stone up. Thankfully, you are sedated when they put it in. Weirdest feeling ever was when the nurse pulled that thing out of me…..

According to this thread I am the worst and poorest person on the OC. My first kidney stone occurred on July 4, 2009 and since then I've passed at least 12 stones and have had two lithotripsies. For some reason, mine never hurt in my back but always start in the lower front. It feels just like I've been kicked in the groin but it never stops hurting. Oxycodone is my friend and I always keep some at work, in my car and at home! I've had four visits to the ER (Dublin Methodist has a great ER and usually isn't busy at all). The first two they took an MRI but with the last two all they needed was an x-ray because I can tell them exactly where the stone is.

My first stone hung around for 9 weeks. It would hurt for a day and then settle down for a few days. It continued this pattern for the full 9 weeks and I finally passed a 5mm stone on Labor Day weekend. I've passed at least three stones that didn't hurt at all. I was just peeing and out it came.

Fortunately, it's been over a year since my last stone. I drink tons of water and also lemonade. Wouldn't wish a kidney stone on anybody at anytime.

Public service announcement. If you think you have kidney stones, go to the Dr to confirm. Doctors thought I had kidney stones 3 years ago, turned out to be bladder cancer. Very similar symptoms.

As for the question. No kidney stones for me.

I passed one half the size of a green pea once.

    Had zero pain...no kidding.

I had a physical for work (have to have them twice a year when working at a chemical plant) and the doctor said I needed to go see a urologist as I had blood in my urine.

Did so, they did the whole "drink the purple drank and we will watch on an xray". They found nothing from my kidneys through the outlet.

They told me "if anything comes out, bring it in".

A few days later something came tumbling out, zero pain at all but I could feel it.

I retreived the item (with gloves) and took it to the urologist (in a plastic bag).

He looked at me and said "you passed that!? You should have been in the ER and/or passed out in pain".

When I told him I had zero pain he said the only explanation is that the stone did not form at all until it was in my bladder, as all the pain is when it travels from the kidney to the bladder.

I know, tl:dr and "cool story bro", but that's my only experience with a kidney stone.

    That is dead on.

All the pain I have had from my Kidney Stones the past 3 months has been when they traveled from the Kidney to the bladder.

Actually passing them wasn't painful, except for the second one that got stuck for a day about midway down the track to leaving. That was incredibly unpleasant.

Both of mine were 4MM, which was passable but not small enough I wouldn't notice them.

How to reduce the pain, or shorten the *passing* time...?Drink as much water right now as possible, put freaking Tabasco sauce on your your tongue if you have to. The only way to pass this thing is urination, and if your not passing fluids your going to experience the worst pain you've ever experienced.

Old thread, I know, but Jesus Christ. These little bastards suck. I'm on day 21 of dealing with my first one. When people say the worst pain ever, they are certainly not exaggerating.

This thread makes me lol. This is about the only time sleeper has went away from his way of posting.

It takes a lot to get me to go to the hospital. My back started aching about 1:30 pm on July 8th, by 3:30 pm, I'd decided I was going to the ER. I ended up vomiting 3 or 4 times from the pain. That was a first as well. ER doc came back and said it was a 7mm stone, and he gave me Norco. This was on a Friday, and the Norco didn't do shit.

Finally on Monday I got in to see the Urologist. She was pissed because he only gave me Norco. So she gave me Percs and decided to wait a week and see if the stone would pass on it owns. A week later, the stone hadn't move.

So they scheduled me to have the procedure to break it up. That was yesterday. The stone still hadn't moved. It's sitting right below my kidney. During the procedure, she lost sight of it, so she's not sure if it broke up or not, and she put a fucking stint in me to try to help it move along. She said I'd know by the night if it worked or not. Here it is the following morning, and I feel no difference, so I'm guessing it didn't break up. If it didn't, I have to go to Cleveland to have it surgically removed.

    Cool story.

Best thing I've ever had for kidney stones, other than prescription pain killers, is cranberry juice. The cranberry juice helps break up the kidney stone much better than water. The doctor told me the same thing. My favorite is white cranberry and strawberry, but cranberry and peach also tastes good.
I still buy the juice every now and then drink it, especially if I feel the first signs of mild pain. It seems to work really well.

Good call. I forget the reasoning, but cranberry juice is great for nephrology/urology related illnesses.

    Drink more beer.

    One consolation:

I heard an old wive's tale that said the bigger the stone, the bigger the weiner.

The Lord doesn't give us more than we can handle.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

    Hope you are feeling better.
