New Bike "Helmet"

  • Fly4Fun
This is a pretty fucking brilliant advance in "helmet" technology for bike riders. It's like an airbag in this thing pouch around your neck that can detect when you're in an accident and deploys around your head. According to the report it's more absorbent than traditional helmets as well.

Good question. I didn't watch the whole video.

That, the price, and how often you crash would be a factor in whether to buy it. Obviously some crashes are out of your control (someone else hitting you or causing the accident), but some people are a bit more clumsy on bikes and tend to fall over from time to time.

I do not make my daughter, although I probably should. She mostly just rides her bike in our driveway. I should make her wear one when we go on bike rides.

I used to never wear one snowboarding. It was fucking freezing one time and my buddy had an extra helmet I wore instead of my hat cause it was warmer. I going through the woods, fell, and hit my head on a rock. I bought a helmet and wore one ever since.

I've cracked my head several times snowboarding and mountain biking, no way I'd ever do either without a helmet.

I never wore a helmet when I was a kid, but I will probably make my children wear them when they are young.

    It's one time use and it's $500

I wear a helmet when I ski. I have found them warmer than hats.

I don't make my kids wear helmets when riding their bikes. I never did when I was a kid.

I only wore a helmet as a kid if my mother said something. Whenever I ride a bike now I always wear a helmet.

I still don't wear one when skiing though. It's admittedly stupid not to especially if going through trees, it's just not something I consider when I go though.

If it's better it's worth it. I've been hit one and close to being door'd several times. If this was the difference between brain being cracked open, I'd strongly consider it.

How many uses do you think you get out of your helmet?

You crash and hit your head, you're supposed to get a new helmet.

Also its a daily use helmet until it deploys.

As for kids, kind of depends. I never wore a helmet when I was a kid, either. Maybe I did (don't remember) before I learned to ride a bike.

But I'd say the same rule should apply to adults - in a quiet suburb I think you're fine. In the city, or just on busier streets, I'd recommend wearing helmets. As a kid I generally avoided the busy streets on my bike (those with speed limits over 25mph).

Besides the price, that's a lot of trust to place in that helmet deploying properly when you REALLY need it. Bigger problem would seem to be malfunction (cars have sensors in the bumper/frame to improve reliability).

I'm also not sure that it would be more comfortable to wear than a helmet. Still, kudos for a pretty slick innovation.

The surgery on your head is probably going to be a lot more expensive. Just a guess.

    No, I don't make mine.

When I was a kid I'd crash on purpose with out a helmet all the time.

I crashed unexpectedly once in college and the hospital bill after being in a coma for a week was slightly more expensive than a helmet.

Will easily be a five-digit number.

You can also wear helmets that cost a tiny fraction of $500.

Would this work for a Harley if so I might be interested in an adult version if not they need to expand it to work for one and be tough enough to stay inflated until you came to rest

Apparently, there's some uncertainty of their effectiveness (or they mess up your hair), thus the available market for these new helmets.
