Attitude about your job
-
HereticWhen it comes to work, what is your general attitude about your job and its purpose in your life?
For me, it's the "means to an end" attitude. I like to buy things. I like to hang out with friends. Work provides me with money to do those things, as well as those minor details like having a roof over my head and working utilities. Therefore, I work.
To me, it's a good and relaxed way of thinking. I tend to be pretty efficient and willing to alter my general schedule in order to get things done. But when I leave the office, the office leaves my brain most of the time. The only possible negative is that I'm not the guy you're looking for when you want someone to really go above and beyond the call of duty, because I don't really care that much.
On the other hand, the person in the office who's most emotionally invested in the job is a lot better for that kind of thing...but also seems to often be stressed out and high-strung because she seems to live and die based on what's going on with the company. We go through corporate changes and I'm just chill and rolling with the punches; while she gets super-stressed and obsesses over any possible thing that could go wrong. To the point where her passion for the job probably is more of a negative than things like my general apathy for anything that would cause me to dedicate more time and energy to work-stuff because when she gets upset with changes, she'll rant and complain about them to anyone she can. It's gotta be great for customers and the like to hear a representative of a company badmouthing it because she's upset about changes.
So, what say you about your attitude towards work and how that goes with or clashes with that of other people in your office? -
said_aouitaI don't do well with stress so my current job is awesome. Only bad part is having to pay a union to be employed there.
A few years ago when working in a cubicle I felt a lot more stress. I don't know if the benefits are any better now being union. The 401k working for a Morgan Stanley company was hard to beat. -
dlazzI'm with Heretic, 100%.
I am pretty good at leaving stress behind at work. What bothers me much more is stupid shit that occurs ABOUT my job, not necessarily the work involved.
Example: Assuming the responsibility of a departed employee without adjusted compensation. -
queencitybuckeyeI like what I do more days than not. I don't get people who work an entire lifetime at a job or jobs they hate, and tell you this as kind of a badge of honor. Too much of your life wasted.

Commander of AwesomeI used to be pretty good at turning the office off once I left the building, but I have a new job where I'm working 60 hours a week and least one weekend day a week until Christmas is over. This is due toa variety of issues, one of which being I'm on my 3rd boss since being here. My newest, is a new boss, who's never managed anyone before.
There is a lot of pressure/work put on my position at the company and it's draining. I go through being stressed, not being able to sleep at night, etc... After I've been here a year (couple of months) I'm going to look into changes roles within the organization. I'm making good money, but I don't think it's worth it. -

That's an interesting way to look at it. I feel the more money you make, the more you're probably going to stress about work at home.Commander of Awesome;1533872 wrote: I'm making good money, but I don't think it's worth it. -

A little of both, I think. -
Ironman92I do very well with leaving stress/issues at work and my 75 minute ride home helps.
My wife sucked at leaving her stresses at work and let it affect her pretty good all the time.....but since her parents both died of cancer within 5 weeks of each other, she's realized what is really important and what isn't. Also helps that her new job is right up her alley and with a mix of common sense men and moderately intelligent women. Her old jobs were all shit stirring women that bitched just to bitch. -
like_thatI work to live, not live to work pretty much. I am not going to be some lazy POS at work, but especially after being furloughed twice now, I just don't find the motivation to go above and beyond for my employer.

OSHI love my career. I couldn't think of anything else I would rather be doing, or if I couldn't do this anymore...
I put everything I have into my career. It means a lot to me to work with talented young people. I like pushing individuals to achieve more and be better in every facet of their lives.
I am blessed to get paid to do this hobby. I know the pay isn't great, nor will it ever be, but the perk is getting other things instead of great pay. -
friendfromlowryI work in an allied health department at a rural hospital, probably about 25-30 people in my department. For the most part, everyone is pretty laid back. It's a team job and we have to do so much work and see so many patients a shift, so if something happens, then everyone pulls together. I rarely stress over it except for extreme situations, like the other morning we had two critical babies born, one I had to tend to for about four hours. Sometimes, you go home wondering you charted everything correctly and such.
There's 2-3 women in the department that constantly bitch if they're overworked. No one gives a shit about them.
I really want to go to physician assistant school, but I'm not sure how I'd pay for it. It's about 60K for two years, which would be on top of the student loans I already have. Plus, the schooling is intense where you can hardly work during it, so I would probably be out of an income as well. -
sleeperI really hate my job but I make a lot of money. Mostly I hate my job because I feel like a snake oil salesman half the time and the stuff I do doesn't add any real value(at least in my opinion, the client thinks otherwise which is all that matters). I also don't understand the point of 40 hour work weeks; I usually work about 50 hours a week but most of it is just for show. I probably only do about 20 hours of actual work per week and then spend the rest of my time in meetings(useless 99% of the time) or out at lunch.
I guess I can't complain. -
Devils AdvocateMy job would be great, if everybody around me did fucking their's.
I don't care if your dog died, or you wife was found out to be sucking somebody elses dick. Do your fucking job.

This. I don't mind my job but the people suck. Nothing but a bunch of 12 year olds. Trying to find reasons to run to the supervisor or find ways to fuck you. It's absolutely incredible the shit they try to bitch about. Junior high drama.Devils Advocate;1533968 wrote:My job would be great, if everybody around me did fucking their's. -
SonofanumpEmployment is a way to provide for my family.
Most weeks I can get 40 hours of work done in 25 hours.
Every once in a while I need to actually put in a 50 hour week. -

I agree. I work in a team environment and people say they made calls when they really didn't or just pass the buck to someone else and it's just bullshit. Otherwise my job isn't bad. Good benefits for a 24 yr old.Devils Advocate;1533968 wrote:My job would be great, if everybody around me did fucking their's.

HereticAnd today is a golden example of all this.
Due to company changes, some of what we do has been outsourced to another department. This is the first week of that. Stuff hasn't been done to the expectations of the "overly emotionally invested" person. She's been bitching and moaning about how ugly everything is and how she's "sick to her stomach".
Yeah, it is subpar compared to the norm. And not all specifications were actually followed. But it's one week. Work with them through growing pains and if things aren't improving, then get bothered. They're people too, and they've had a lot of extra work dumped on them due to the changes, so it goes to show things might be a bit choppy for a while, until things get settled. But here, with some people, the ONLY way to handle any adversity is to turn into a raging drama queen and act like it's the end of the world.
So I put on headphones and crank it up to block everyone out. Just the sort of annoying stuff that makes me wish I could do everything from home, so I wouldn't have to come in here for any reason other than to check up on things. -
pmoney25I really like my job. I don't love it. I'm good at it but don't want to do it for much longer. About 3 years is the plan.
After my cancer scare 3 years ago. I've become great at leaving stress at work.
My wife however loves her job.
