BBM Is Back
-
hasbeenI know we had a few of us who did the BBM group back a few years ago. Well, since we've all realized BB phones blow no one uses it anymore.
Apparently, BBM is now out on the play store and app store for android/iPhone.
Weird.
Cool story. -
TedShecklerWhy this instead of texts, iMessage, or whatever Android uses?

Android just uses normal SMS/MMS. There's nothing like 'iMessage' for Android(that i know of).TedSheckler;1523701 wrote:Why this instead of texts, iMessage, or whatever Android uses?
BBM can do a lot just within it's own app. Honestly, I haven't use BBM since I got rid of my BB Storm 3 years ago, but here's an article I google'd:

TedShecklerSo it looks like the big selling point is the "D" and "R"? iMessage does that. I just don't see the need for BBM. Of course, I have never used a Blackberry. (I rocked the Treo back in the day) And I don't know anyone who has a BB today.

sherm03Thanks to Hangouts, this will not do well on Android.
Once again, Blackberry is just a little too late to the party. Had they done this when Android was first taking off, it would have gone crazy because there were no easy ways to do group messages, etc. on Android. But that's all in the past, and Android is much further along now.
I think the only ones that will be downloading this on iPhone or Android are the Enterprise customers that have a boss who is still clinging to his Blackberry. Everyone else has moved on. -

I can't wait for Hangouts to support SMS! It's long overdue. -
reclegend22BBM was awesome back in the day when The Storm was the cool phone on the block. Agree with others, however, that, like AIM, it is now a thing of the past. Kind of makes me nostalgic, though, for my BlackBerry.

I still use AIM. We actually use it at work for communication amongst employees. None of my outside "buddies" are ever online.reclegend22;1523751 wrote:BBM was awesome back in the day when The Storm was the cool phone on the block. Yeah, we have a thing called "Same Time" at my work that works in the exact same way as AIM. I honestly thought that AIM closed down a year ago or so. I used to use it to communicate with other players when I was playing online poker, but that's been four or five years now. Interesting. Might try to sign back on and see if any of the people on my list are still on. Around 2000 and 2001, AIM was like the greatest thing in the world. My entire life revolved around it. Funny how things change so dramatically in just a few years.ernest_t_bass;1523753 wrote:I still use AIM. We actually use it at work for communication amongst employees. Does it have a similar design layout to the Storm-era version? I always enjoyed the "status" feature.oberhaus;1523843 wrote:I just downloaded it for shits and giggles. -

ZoltanSort of off topic, but has anyone found a good app that lets you reply "in line" with group iphone messages on your android? When i get Iphone group messages they just come in as individual messages from the different people, and I don't have the option to reply to all. I can click the message properties and see the other numbers copied on the text though.

I'm 99% sure that this isn't possible because the way Apple implemented group messaging. I think they did a "workaround" way and effectively broke it for everyone who isn't on an iPhone.Zoltan;1523883 wrote:Sort of off topic, but has anyone found a good app that lets you reply "in line" with group iphone messages on your android? you could try the third-party messaging apps and see if it helps...they're basically "layers" on top of the stock messaging app. Handcent and GO SMS come to mind.
I personally find group messages to be fucking irritating...there's no way to "mute" them. -

I'm able to receive/send group messages with iPhone users. Right above the text enter box are two tabs, one for group messages, one for individual. Select the group tab.Zoltan;1523883 wrote:Sort of off topic, but has anyone found a good app that lets you reply "in line" with group iphone messages on your android? I'm assuming they'll roll a new Hangouts out to everyone enabling SMS.hasbeen;1525040 wrote:Unfortunately, it won't roll out to my vzw note 3 for like 5 months and I don't root.
Again. Assuming. -

I feel like I read on androidcentral that adding SMS to hangouts required some kind of change in the OS which is why they couldn't just update the app. That doesn't make sense though.dlazz;1525041 wrote:I'm assuming they'll roll a new Hangouts out to everyone enabling SMS.
