Are there really any scary movies?

  What movies out there do you really think are scary? They always have these type of movies and not really seem to be.

  I don't get scared by movies.
  
  I saw a couple that were alright...The Conjuring and Mama. Unfortunately, Mama had a terrible ending. The Conjuring was sort of freaky because there are some "based on a true story" storylines in it.

  No. Scary movies scare children...and that is part of growing up. Some films are better than others in that regard. The Exorcist is an example of one of the better ones and doesn't rely on cheap scares but is a real movie.

  I think a lot of it depends on the environment you are in when watching this variety of movie. If you watched Paranormal Activity in the theaters, it was probably entertaining but certainly not very frightening. On the other hand, if you watched The Strangers -- which was based on the "based on true events" formula -- for the first time by yourself or with a small group of people at home in the rural seclusion of the country, then I think -- for me at least -- the movie did an effective job of creating an unsettling and overall eerie mood. So yeah, I think there are some movies that can provide a legitimate scare.

  Yeah, I don't know if I get scared any more...getting mildly anxious is about the best I can hope for. Darkness Falls is the best I've seen in recent memory.
  
  And part of the problem is most horror films these days are just too campy. That really wasn't the case with some of the classics like Exorcist, Friday 13th (I thru IV), Nightmare on Elm Street...I'd throw in the first Alien and Predator movies, too.

  As a child Nightmare on Elm Street was pretty scary before Freddy got to corny

  The first "The Hills Have Eyes" was pretty well done...maybe more creepy than scary, but it was entertaining. Part of that was probably just the desert being a refreshing change from the typical horror film setting.
  
  "The Descent" (first one) was also entertaining because of the added drama of being lost in a cave/stuck in tight spots or dead ends.

  As somewhat of a horror film buff, The Hills Have Eyes was one of the most anticipated movies of the last decade for me and, for the most part, it lived up to that hype. Along those same lines, I enjoyed the first Wrong Turn a lot. It was a creepy movie with great atmosphere.
  
  I also really enjoyed The Ring. It came out when I was in high school and I remember watching it with a bunch of friends and being pretty creeped out while driving home that night.

  Some of the sick, twisted, torture movies are scary (read as concerning) because people are messed up enough to actually do that.

  Wrong Turn scared the shit out of me when I watched it up at my cabin in northern Michigan. Not a good setting for a movie like that lol

  When I was little the 2 that got me the most were It and Children of the corn, When that movie came out Qe lived just outside a small town with Corn fields on both side of Pur house. Not really that a art but I enjoyed Rose Red

  Movies that have stuff just jump out of the dark or something just to make you jumpy in your seat is "scary" to me.

  Every time we are traveling to the casinos in West Virginia we reference this movie with all of the local "scenery."

  For anyone who enjoys a classic atmospheric horror film/thriller, check out Silent House with Elizabeth Olsen. It was made using the "inspired by true events" device and it is definitely a ride worth taking. It's a throwback.

  I dunno if it really is considered scary but "Flatliners" left me in silence and saying "WTF.....?" when I saw in the theater.
  I suppose the only scary part is getting your ass kicked by Billy Mahoney.
