When I was a kid, I would have said without question the BGSU Rec Center. Spent so many weekends there with my friends playing pick-up basketball. God it was so much fun. I can still smell the chlorine as it hit you when walking in the front entrance. We'd play for hours and hours and hours and it never got old. And like the bar on Cheers, the cast of regulars there was always the same. Best memories of my youth.

Keeping with that theme, I'd add Anderson Arena to the list. In the two-row wooden bleachers behind the north basket. It was the best place to watch a high school tournament game in the state. That place really did roar.

For me it has to be the Hocking Hills.

Tie between Put-In-Bay on the weekday and the Shoe on game day. PIB isn't completely ridiculous on a Tuesday

You should see the upgrade they are doing to it. Also I agree Anderson Arena was a sick place to watch games, it's sad however now seeing how bad the state of the program is

Pretty much any basketball court. Don't really have a favorite vacation spot in Ohio. Ours is in Michigan.

Thats what you get for hiring a retread coach with nothing to prove and no real ambition. BG is a step down in his career, and he is old enough he doesnt have a will to get back. I hate when programs hire guys like that.

The right hires for mid-majors is the enthusiastic coach who wants to get to the big stage. You might only have him for 5 years, but at least your program wont be stagnant...

Orr cares too much about the high school program, too. I've heard it's one of the reasons that Vaughn left. I've also heard (from 2nd person), that legendary Paul Wayne was offered the BGHS coaching job, but he turned it down b/c he heard Orr had too much control of the program. AD Mike Vannette (sp?) left there for Napoleon for similar reasons.

Or maybe one of the requirements in the job description was to try to score.

I do agree that Wayne is a legend, though. He won and he won big (figuratively, of course, as his teams normally scored about 8 points). I saw Paul at one of my little sister's high school games a couple of years ago over at Holgate and chatted with him for awhile. Nice guy. I told him it was great seeing him coach down at the state tournament all those years, but that it would have been more entertaining if he had brought his teams with him. He laughed. Holgate, if you'll remember, was notorious for snail-paced basketball and set a boy's state tournament record for fewest points in a quarter against Webster in 2004 with 0. SMH.

I know Paul personally, and he is a good friend. The Wayno you describe is the Wayno of rumors. While he did run a slow-down pace (at times), he also was willing to score when he had his horses. What most people don't realize, is that the "slow down" of the game came mostly from his tenacious defense. The incredible thing about Wayno was the assessment he gave of his own talent. He put his kids in a position to WIN every single year. There are a lot of his teams who would have drastically underperformed had they been with any other program, b/c of the lack of actual basketball talent that they had. If they weren't good, he taught them to play a certain way, that would put them in a position to be competitive and win games. Such a great basketball mind.

They did offer it to him. This came straight from Wayno's mouth. Wayno will be assisting Napoleon this year.

Yeah, I was definitely feeding into the common stereotype of Paul Wayne with my above post. I probably saw Holgate play somewhere between 10 and 15 times when he was at the helm of the Tigers and can definitely attest to the fact that he seemed to get every last drop of talent out of his players, which is the ultimate testament of a great coach and what separates the good from the great at the high school level. You have to play with what you are given. And I'd estimate that Wayne only played with -- maybe -- one all-state level talent while at Holgate (one of the Brubakers), and even that's probably a stretch.

Glad to see he's still doing his thing.

One of my favorite spots is the family cottage on Berlin. Yeah Berlin is probably toxic but it can be nice too.

I actually typed out a response on Tapatalk and when I went to post it said "posting was locked by the administrator", taking my typed post with it...so I had to come up with something.

IIRC, I typed something along the lines of: There's a lot of "good" places in Ohio, but nothing that leaps out at me. Most of my favorite memories of going places occurred in other states.

    Hope this helps

Heading there this weekend. Any recommendations? We're staying at ravenwood castle and have zip lining Saturday at noon. What should we do after zipping?

Not sure how long the zip line tours take, but you can do some canoeing if time allows it, or rent some ATV's. Obviously plenty of hiking available. Theres a putt putt course in Logan as well. If you get hungry, you have to grab a pizza and cheesesticks from Pizza Crossing in Logan too.

That's unfortunate. I can name numerous awesome places in Ohio without even putting much thought into it. I am also not a cranky, pessimistic contrarian*, though.

    *Sorry, but it's true.

Had to google 'contrarian'. I do fit that build most of the time, but I just don't relate to Ohio that much I guess.

Most of my favorite "spots" were spent with friends and family. I'm reaching an age where most of my friends are getting married/moving away/etc, so most of those "spots" are gone. Factor in that my childhood homes are now completely different, I don't have a whole lot else to lean on.

I do enjoy getting in my car and taking a pointless 3 hour drive, though. Does that count?

    No, since it's a Hyundai.
