High School athlete suspended for driving to pick up drunk friend

  • Fly4Fun
This is just another instance of a school taking a no tolerance policy and screwing up.

A girl drove to a party to pick up a friend after getting a call from a drunk friend to drive her home. Police were there as she arrived. An officer even noted and vouched for sobriety.

But the school suspends her as they are
"trying to take a very serious and principled stand regarding alcohol. And we all get that. Teen drinking is a serious problem." [\quote]

Basically they would have preferred if she allowed her friend to drive drunk instead of "involving" herself with the dangers of being around alcohol (like drunk driving).

    Incredibly moronic...and irresponsible.

Legally I'm not even sure they could suspend her. She wasn't drunk, and she wasn't at the party.

Also, I've not heard of zero tolerance policies for the general student pop...I've only seen it applied with regard to participation in extra-curriculars.

Ridiculous. How would that girl live with herself if she declined to give her friend a ride home, and she was killed in an accident? It would haunt her for the rest of her life.

She was suspended from the volleyball team, not school.

    OK, but still moronic.

Although I can see the misguided logic that they want kids to call their parents so mom & dad can address the issue. But that's just stupid - that a kid is saved from driving drunk should trump everything 10X over.

Asinine decision by the school. I'd pull my kids immediately as the school is obviously administered by morons.

I hope she isn't a senior so the parents can open enroll her to a rival school for next season
