  Just came back to update my home security situation...I made it a priority over the past month, and I think we are pretty well set now.
  
  What I did:
  
  Simplisafe system -- Bought a refurb system and added on an additional motion detector and a water sensor (had a basement sump pump fail about 5 years ago...never again!!). It took about 20 minutes to set up the entry sensors and motion sensors, then I spent about 30 minutes testing everything. I basically just pretended to be a robber and saw how far I could get moving slowly in rooms, etc., and I'm very pleased with the system. We just have the standard base alarm, which is housed in our bedroom to alert me if there is any entry or motion to our house in the night.
  
  -Fake TV light - I bought this right after my initial post, I just keep it on all the time in our front room...I'll never know if it has actually worked, but it was cheap deterrent, so I grabbed one.
  
  -Guns - I got my concealed carry permit, got a S&W Bodyguard .380 for concealed carry (got a great deal and a $100 gift card towards a future purchase). I then used the $100 gift card towards a Mossberg 500 shotgun, which is currently being shipped to me.
  
  -Safe - Got a large Barska biometric safe to go in my closet....It will do the jobs of keeping the kids out and having enough room to store the guns.
  
  
  So, all in all I spent a little over $1,000 on the above over the past month. The great thing is that everything can move with us when we move, including the safe and alarm system, so everything above should help to protect us for a long time.

  After college I moved in with two roommates to a 3 story house on the edge of Dublin and Worthington. ( Hard Road Area). The neighborhood was nice but nearby was some really bad apartments. Well the first week we were there someone broke our back patio door out to try and enter the house. My roommates both had guns and grabbed them but they were to late because their Pitbulls (each of my roommates had one) had already chased whoever it was out of the house. They were a pretty good security system.
  
  for our new home I have a handgun that I keep in the nightstand .

  Good idea, but I think in any city area you should have this especially in a city with a similar murder and violent crime rate. Toledo is the #1 city in the country in Burglaries per capita, it's definitely not as bad as Detroit, but the North and East side have really went downhill in the last few years
