Anyone know Nashville?

Have never been, thinking about a long weekend with the wife. Looking for any suggestions of where to stay, what to do, what's overhyped, etc.

Never been there. Hope this helps. /dlazz'd

Probably the most underrated city in the U.S. - there is a reason why Kirk Herbstreit moved there. It isn't all about country music, there is a lot of good live music in general.

I would recommend downtown hotels, Nashville is huge geographically, and the hotels are relatively inexpensive. The West End near Vandy also has places to stay, a Marriott and a couple of similar hotels. If you are looking for luxury you might have to go to a high-end bed and breakfast. Tripadvisor.com can perhaps help.

Food is good, not New Orleans/San Francisco good but there are quality spots. Pancake Pantry and Loveless Cafe (that's a bit outside the city limits) are noted. But the main draw is just the number of bars and quality music you can find on any single night.

I've only been there once. Spent two nights, one of them at the Davidson County Jail. The city was awesome, though. We went to the Preds-BJs game.

I live about 40 minutes from Nashville. Plenty of things to do. As MB points out the Music City is more than just country music. The bars downtown provide a wide range of live music including jazz, rock, R&B, etc.

The Opryland Hotel is nice. Good food and great atmosphere but a tad overpriced.

You'll definitely want to check out the Ryman Auditorium and maybe even catch a show either there or at the Bridgestone Arena.

Another sort of cool thing to do is a river boat dinner & show on the General Jackson.

There are plenty of walking tours you can purchase to get a better understanding of Nashville history.

    Nashville is definitely underrated.

My favorite city to visit. The nice hotels on Lower Broadway are not inexpensive. About $230/night for a Holiday Inn Express. The one "must" is the backstage tour of the Ryman Auditorium, it will give you chills, especially if you get a good tour guide. As far as the bars, you have to hit up Tootsies, it's the honky tonk with the most history, and where the big time country music players will show up to if they're in town. There is some great food. The Big River Grille and Brewing Works is right on Lower Broadway. Puckett's General Store & Restaurant is really good, especially for breakfast. A couple other places are Arnold's and Saverino Cucina(both were on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives), Burger Up, and Pie in the Sky. Going over to Opry Mills is worth the short trip. Bridgestone Arena and LP Field are both right downtown, so you could catch a Predators or Titans game.

Visit Princes Hot Chicken. Hot Chicken is Nashvilles famous food and Princes does it the best but, make sure to order a level less then you think you can handle because it is hot!!! Also get a piece of pie if there's a lady selling me out front they are to die for. Don't be afraid of the location it may look Ghetto but its safe and usually 75% local 25% tourist trying the place. Goodness Gracious cafe in Murfreesboro is the best breakfast I have ever ate and worth the drive from downtown Nashville. May sure to check out the Ryman and Jack Whites Studio/Office Third man Records. He will come out and talk to visitors quite often. Go downtown and go bar hopping. NashVegas is a great city.
