Anyone have an idea on the value of teak lumber?

  • justincredible
I bought three teak boards a few years ago on the cheap at a liquidation sale of some warehouse. I was initially going to make a desk out of them but ended up going in another direction. They are, if I remember correctly, ~2" thick, ~8' long, and range between 8-12" wide. I'd like to list them on craigslist and get them out of my basement but I'm not sure where to start on a price.

If you want to get rid of them cheap put them on your porch! :)

Don't try Google or maybe a home improvement store's website, this site will provide much better info.

It looks like I could cut them in to smaller pieces and get a decent amount out of them on ebay.

I did a google search for "teak lumber prices" and didn't find much useful info. But thanks, this helped.

Is it rough sawed or has it been planed?

Surfaces have been planed. Edges are rough.

The prices I have looked at lately were right around $15-17 per board foot. That should give you a starting point. Some auctions I have been to lately were as high as 20 per bf.

Just clarifying my understanding of board feet. This would (potentially) make each 8' board worth between $120-140? Width plays no role here, right?

And obviously, I know they are only worth what someone is willing to pay. I just wanted to come up with a decent starting price to list them at and go from there.

Also, thanks and reps for the info.

length times width times thickness divided by 144. The 8'*12"*2"/144 comes to 16 board feet. 16*17 272 per board.

Holy shit. I like your math better.

What is different about these boards...gold plated? $5 bills taped to one side? Lined with Dusty Baker rookie cards?

Lol. I would too. Not sure if you know very many boat builders, but you might see if you can find some around you. They tend to buy teak quite a bit.

FA Q. That's a question I want to know, too.

Teak is so expensive because it's basically only found in Southern Asia and is controlled similarly to that of oil in the Middle East. Myanmar is the worlds leading exporter in teak and they keep supply low to keep prices high, while Indonesia actually does not allow raw teak lumber to be sold, you have to buy the finished product from there. It's incredibly durable and most importantly to boaters, it's water resistant
