I enjoyed this one for a Tom Cruise movie.

Really good. Saw it 12 years ago and it brought back memories from those days.

I watched Killers last night for the first time. I thought it was VERY entertaining. I found myself laughing throughout the entire movie. Yeah it was most definitely a "chick flick" and sure it was totally unrealistic, but it did exactly what a movie like that should do - entertain and provide a few laughs along the way. Katherine Heigl is a bombshell. Loved staring at her in the scene where she was wearing just a bra. Say what you want about Kutcher, but he's a good actor / makes entertaining movies. New Year's Eve, No Strings Attached, Killers, The Guardian (<-- GREAT movie), Guess Who, The Butterfly Effect (<-- GREAT movie), and Cheaper by the Dozen... all movies that delivered. Side note: Why does Kutcher ALWAYS look like a bum when you see photos of him off set, but yet he always looks like a handsome/put-together guy on the screen? Why wouldn't he choose to always look like that? Why's he gotta grow the long hair and go for the bum/hippie look?!

If you're talking movies of any era and want a history lesson, I'd recommend 1971 Italian giallo Twitch of the Death Nerve. It's no masterpiece (slow-building, absolutely retarded ending and a few other flaws). But it did serve as the inspiration for the slashers our studios were putting out in the 80s and has some good, gory kills (including two that were directly swiped for Friday the 13th 2). And tries (with some degree of success) to actually have a story that's more complex than "masked maniac kills everyone except this one virgin chick who somehow outsmarts him and wins". I mean, the Italians aren't really good at making stories that make sense, but god love 'em, they tried.

I'd group him in with DeNiro and Pacino, since Hanks is approaching 60. I didn't include him, though, because I personally don't really care for him. Although, I do appreciate the fact that he's one of the all-time greats.

Also, I did include Denzel in my list. I listed him as Washington.

Another actor that I think deserves mention in this conversation is Brad Pitt. His performances in A River Runs Through It and Moneyball were among the best in cinema history.

I think I would have Edward norton over Bale

Those two are incredibly close and incredibly diverse. I'd have them both right there in a top 5.

No way. Bale over Norton, and it's not even close.

    Bale:
    The Dark Knight Rises
    The Dark Knight
    The Prestige
    Batman Begins
    The Machinist
    American Psycho

    Norton:
    The Illusionist
    Keeping the Faith
    Fight Club
    American History X
    Rounders

    Bale's Batman series > Norton's Hulk series
    Bale's Prestige > Norton's Illusionist
  • Laley23
I don't think I can take that list seriously since you left off both of their best acting jobs.

Primal Fear for Norton and The Fighter for Bale

Also, lets not forget the range Bale has. He starred in a damn musical as a teenager (Newsies).
  • Laley23
I'm still baffled by how it isn't close also.

    American History X??
    Fight Club??
    The Score????

Anyone who has been nominated for 2 Academy Awards by age 40 is in the discussion. It's actually EASIER to make a case for Norton over Bale.

norton was good in the red dragon

I disagree that it's not even close, but I can see why someone would choose Bale over Norton.

You also forgot Norton's appearance (albeit he didn't really do much) in one of my favorite movies, Italian Job. Charlize Theron ftw

That's because I haven't seen either of those.

Italian Job was good, but you can't really count that when it wasn't a major role for Norton. You even said he didn't really do much in the film.

Fair enough. But I would caution bold statement like that if you haven't seen some of the best work they have put out.

On that note, watch both those movies.

Moneyball was a great film, ranking right up there with A Few Good Men and The Social Network as one of Aaron Sorkin's best works and certainly one of the best films of the last decade. As such, Pitt's performance, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor, deserves high acclaim. It was a tremendous performance by Pitt.

As for Christian Bale, while he's great in almost anything he does, I think his magnum opus is American Psycho. He took a role that in the hands of almost any other actor would have reduced the film to little more than a second-rate slasher movie and elevated it into one of the all-time great protagonists in an underrated American masterpiece. Among the handful of elite actors who possibly could have achieved that feat in such an offbeat role, Leonardo DiCaprio, Edward Norton, Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp were all considered for the part before it ultimately was cast to Bale. All would have been fantastic choices, but it's hard to envision any of them producing as chillingly dark, empty and yet utterly mesmerizing a character as Bale.

I'll take Ed Norton over Bale. Norton's 25th Hour hasn't been mentioned either.
