Hydroponics

  • Fred Flintstone
Anyone grow herbs or vegetables using hydroponics? I recently started deep water cultures for tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, and green peppers. Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

    {insert marijuana joke here}

I noticed a new hydroponics store opened up near us and want to stop in at some point. I wouldn't mind setting up a small vegetable grow in my basement just for shits and giggles. I'd also love to trigger an investigation and raid on my home that would turn up zero illegal activity. It would not suprise me at all to see that every single person that purchases hydro equipment with a credit card gets put on some sort of list.

On a serious note, how does the process work?

I learned this weekend that you can actually request your file from the FBI thanks to the Freedom of Information Act. I sort of want to do it, but also am concerned that they'll see that as suspicion and then start building their file.

Yeah, I found out about this a while back. I know for sure that I have a file with the Secret Service, I'd love to request it just to see what sort of shit they have in it.

...guaranteed ANYONE that comes in under the age of 40 and starts buying hydroponics equipment has their names give to the cops by the store owners!

Nah. Chances are the shop owners are stoners themselves. That would be a total dick move. Also, bad for business. Can't sell shit to a guy sitting in a prison cell.

I was always wanting to build a grow room in my old garage. Having access to fresh veggies year round would be great. Not sure how expensive the lights and hydroponic equipment would be. I have to much money invested in this gun range right now so might have to try this in a few years.

...Would be a total dick move but I'm sure the store owners like staying in business & selling their stuff to the straights rather than be hassled by the police. It may not be the worst thing in the world to not F with the cops when they check out receipts to see if a few stoners are buying growing lights. Pretty much it's go along to get along.

I think the cops are probably more concerned with other things. They can bust people with weed anytime they want but focus more on meth/cocaine/etc.

I'd tell the cops to spend their time more productively. You know, like trying to find actual criminals. The rapists, murderers, etc.

Drug dealers pay cash for their hydro equipment.

This is a great point. Which is why the cops hassling a hydro shop for receipts is futile. If you're running a grow op you aren't paying with any sort of traceable payment.

I know someone with a set up i could probably get ya for cheap lol...

In all seriousness ive seen some pretty crazy setups in my time.

I walked into a hydroponic store for the very reason of the OP. The dudes running the store were confused with what I was saying. "So...you, like, wanna grow tomatoes and shtuff?" ...Yes! Exactly, you dolt. Needless to say, I never stepped foot in the store again - a store that soon after shut it's doors for the last time.

You can get set up for around $100 pretty easily. Especially DWC's )deep water cultures).

    4 -5 gallon buckets $2.75/each
    4 bucket lids $4/each
    1 - 4 port aquarium air pump. $23
PH up and down and PH testing kit $17
    Nutrients for the plants ~$15
Growing media ~$25 for a large bag
    Grow light $32
    1/4" Air pump tubing $3

Secret Service ... I'm pretty sure they have a file on me but that to be expected with some of the work and expertise I have done in my careers. Few years ago I still had military clearance don’t know if I still do???

Hydroponic I have some interest in this but never venture to far into learning more. I understand the idea and have seen this type of growing back in the day.. hahah

I would have to do a cost evaluation first. I was never to sure that the cost of operation was justified in a non-cash crop production.

Watch your electric bills kids...grow lamps will not only cost you big time increases, they are often used as evidence.
  • Belly35
I did used some grow light down at the warehouse this year to start some plants from seeds.. They didn't last very long, got really hot ( I should check the electric bill for that month)... we did have a unexpected fire marshal inspection ..

I'm willing to get money meth is more of a problem in MU than STP, just because of location.

I never noticed any there. You could get your hands on virtually anything else though.

I'm not sure if it cost effective but I enjoy it as a hobby and my daughter likes to go check on the plants each morning. If you look at the picture I recently start trying to grow carrots, celery, and broccoli from cuttings. We'll see how it goes.
