Could you, and would you?

We all know the importance of a living will, but if you didnt have one how tough of a decision would this be?

This past weekend former player I coached and a friend of mine suffered a terrible injury that left himself paralyzed and only being able to live off of a machine. His mind was still there and working fine. He could answer with winks of an eye.

He decided to pull the plug and donate his organs.

I know it would be "easy" to do this in a living will well before anything happened, but how much harder would it be to have to make that decision knowing that if you say yes, your life ends in just a few minutes?

My parents and my wifes parents have living wills. Myself and wife do not. I do believe it's a good idea, just never have done it. None of us could ever imagine having to make that decision and I hope I never have to.

That happened up at my dads lake man, my pops had just left the sand bar to go eat dinner when it happened. Terrible news, man. He was the cousin of a friend of mine.

    In before said's "lol".

I don't think I could or would. I have little kids and I couldn't do that to them, especially if my mind was still there.

    Sorry to hear. Unfortunate.

Get a will man...And life insurance if you don't have any. So your wife/kids/family don't have to make that decision...and you don't leave them with nothing.

And regarding the scenario...pull the plug. Don't want my wife & kids having to care for me forever.

Just did my living will a few months ago, and trying to talk family members to do the same. I'd rather have them make the choice than the potential tension it can cause a family. Life insurance makes it a much bigger mess. Dont leave the decision up for others to make.

I did mine about a year ago now. I would never want to leave that for someone to decide and then live with the guilt of wonder what if.

    What's it cost?

I would rather pull the plug and let my organs go to actual use rather than live like that for the rest of my life.

    It's really a no-brainer (no pun intended)

Yeah, it really sucks. The community outpour of support has been amazing for his family and closests of friends. I saw where on the Funeral home memorial page an RN from the hospital he was taken to chimed in about how in jut 36 hours he changed her life.

So this sandbar is a popular spot..like a boaters beach?

I was reading other posts on my phone last night and couldnt comment but was going to say somthing similiar. It is important to do one so you dont put it on someone else.

Your spouse may know what your request, but when the time comes will she comply? If so, how will she feel knowing she told them to pull the plug? I think it just eliminates some of the painful decisions at an already difficult time.

Also, wasnt there a huge issue a few years ago when a spouse wanted to take his wife off of life support but the mother fought it for years and years?

Yeah the sandbar is a big deal there, always packed every weekend. Boats pull up anchor and party. We go up there quite a bit, it's a good time, kids love it. The thing is man the water is only waste deep on the sand bar at it's deepest point on me (i'm 6'3") so it shocked me when I heard he dove in.

We did ours through a respectable local law firm..was like $2-300. Don't have that $$ falling out of my ears, but it was worth it to have that peace of mind.

I agree. If all I can do is communicate with people through eye movement or something like that, I'd rather be dead.
