Manual or Automatic

  People have been claiming for a while that manual transmissions are on the way out. I personally hate the idea as I love driving with manual. It just makes the whole driving experience better and you feel more in touch with the car in my opinion. Also, I tend to get bored when driving a car with an automatic transmission.

  I prefer manual but we have two automatics. My wife can't drive a manual.

  I can drive both, but my current car is an automatic.
  
  I'm indifferent, but driving in stop and go traffic with a manual is annoying. Especially traffic jams.

  Had a manual for about 10 years. OCCASIONALLY it was fun to drive, but I would say it was more hassle than it was worth and enjoy the automatic much better.
  
  I live in a very flat area with not a whole lot of traffic and thought it was annoying. When I would get into the cities or more hilly areas it became a pain in the ass.

  See, you need to use that to your advantage. Get a nice manual car, then she can't drive it and there is no risk of her crashing it!

  It's also easier to eat and drive with an automatic.

  but done leave it out front or it may get stolen.

  Automatics are more expensive. Poor people drive manuals. I drive an automatic.

  My first two cars were manual and I loved driving them.....but now am almost 39 years old, drive 130-150 miles round trip to work and just don't have enough time to enjoy driving.
  
  Now have 3 automatics
  
  My grandmas prelude is cool as it is automatic but shifter has another slot where you can "shift" gears.....just no clutch.

  I drive manual as, like F4F said, I get a bit bored driving an automatic. There are definitely times in Chicago traffic I wish I had an automatic, but I feel a lot more connected to what's going on and alert when I'm driving manual. Can't really "zone out" as much.

  Currently a manual, I usually switch off between something a little sporty, and a sedan.

  I'm thinking about buying a TDI manual. For the mpg. I love manuals especially since they can have cruise.

  All I have ever owned is a manual, I learned how to drive on a manual, took my test with a manual. Had a manual in college which was great bc no one could drive and thus didn't have to worry about the QQing when they asked to borrow my car and I told them no.
  
  Haven't had a car since 2009 though.

  The "no car" is very odd to me....is this a big city thing? I'm very small town/rural and honestly don't know anyone (with a job and can easily afford one) that doesn't own a car.

  Definitely a big city thing, I work in an office of 5 people and I'm the only one with car. Most people don't want to deal with the hassle of parking/insurance/etc. when you walk/take the train everywhere. If you need to get out of the city, just rent a car.
  
  I own a car because I take trips out of the city (to Wisconsin/Minnesota/Michigan) just about every month to see family.

  Yeah pretty much. Moved to a big city on the east coast where a car was more of a PITA and had to pay over $100 a month just to park it. Then moved to the West Coast where again I don't need a car. I have a bike and ride the ~7 miles to and from work now. Actually pretty nice though I do wish I had a car from time to time here. Never felt that way on the East coast.

  I learned to drive a manual, but own an automatic now and have for my previous 3 vehicles. Technology, use it.

  Born and rasied on stick shift .... can drive anything
  My wife and 3 daughter also know how to drive a stick shift.
  Taugth them the art of popping the cluch, power shifting and down shifting, controlling the car on a hill and shifting without the cluch. The middle daughter just did get it and really did try but in a pinch she could drive a stick shift.
  
  The wife loves driving stick shift and she dam good at it...
