"By the book" at work?

  I assume most of us go thru the work day doing your tasks in your own way and probably have adjusted things to your needs a bit......but what things do you do exactly per rules/procedures?
  
  Personally, I've slightly adjusted everything to a common sense approach throughout the day but I'm by the book on anything time related and practice safety drill for the students.

  I've never been "by the book" person.. Rules are just the middle guidelines and the suggested norm

  There are no rules or procedures for me at work. Only 3 employees in the office and I am the only developer so I am essentially my own boss so long as I get the sites developed by deadline (if there is one). I've never had any issues in the 3.5 years at my current job.

  On certain things I have some freedom. On other things we have strict checklists that Management will hold you accountable for if you fail to follow it. (side note, what a novel idea)

  Always thought it was funny to watch some of the union stalwarts at where I used to work who wouldnt go by the book on most things......unless it was something about break time or something like that.
  There was a union guy who one day was falling behind so I helped him get caught up. Maybe took 15 minutes or so to do. No big deal.
  The next week someone down the line needed a little help, so I obliged. So what did the first guy I helped do? File a grievance for management assisting an hourly union employee with his job.

  Weird day when I'm agreeing with Belly, but this. I know how to do my job and do it well. I have my own ways and techniques which I've learned over the years. If I can do things more efficiently than protocol suggests, well, I've saved myself some time and shown myself to be efficient.

  My first year teaching one of my teacher friends had an emergency and needed to leave. My last period of the day was my planning period so I took her class for her....it's what you do, no questions asked. The next day I had the union rep teacher in my face telling me I had to file for an extra pay grievance. I told him I wasn't doing it. He got pissed and a couple days later we had some big union meeting about why we can't do what I did. SMH

  Back in the day when I worked at ODOT (yeah, I was one of those people flagging cars), just before the July 4 holiday we were putting in hot mix at one of the most busy intersections in the county and we weren't going to get it finished by 2:00, the time we usually go back to the garage. The superintendent showed up to finish the job so probably 2,000 people or so could actually get to the festivities without being inconvenienced. Needless to say the union guys pissed and moaned about it and how that he was breaking the rules, notwithstanding that if it was up to them the work wouldn't get done, and the county would have lost a bunch of money in re-routing vehicles and lower revenues.....the revenues that support the tax base that pay their salaries. SMH.
