Some small cities/villages send deliquent city taxes owed to a collection agency.
City tax comes out of my paycheck, I just don't know if I get a refund or not. I live in the small city of Columbus.

If you live and work within the city limits you should be fine. Your employer will take the correct amount of taxes out.

I ran in to an issue when I stopped working within the city limits of Cincy. Cincy taxes are 2.1% and the city I started working in taxes are 1%. Only 1% was taken from my paycheck and I had to pay the 1.1% difference when taxes came due. I've since adjusted so the proper % is taken out but it was a bitch that first year.

    You still have to file.

I never got any forms regarding it. Turdo Tax also made no mention of it. I'll just count on my employer doing everything for me.

turbotax doesn't care about your local taxes. If you live in a city, you have to file a return and show you paid by attaching your w2.

This seems to indicate I didn't need to file City taxes if I worked in Columbus and the appropriate amount was pulled from my paycheck.

Blue Ash used to mess me up with local taxes when I worked there. They only pull 1% and my Fairfield tax was 1.5%.

This part really freaks me out. If you (or your tax preparer) fuck up they can send you to jail or fine your ass. I'm always worried something is wrong with my return. And I'm sure they will realize it was an accident, but I think once you're rolling around in the government bureaucracy, you're pretty much at their mercy.

I'm betting they really only go after people gaming the system (saying they have kids when they don't, etc) and people who are rich trying to get around paying their taxes.

I wouldn't be shocked if they turned a blind eye to people +/- $100.

I'm sure they can dig up a red flag on damn near anyone's return, but only go after the heavy hitters.

    Reported to the IRS.

Seriously, though. If everyone just stopped paying their taxes wtf could the IRS do?

Obama didn't hire 16,500 new IRS agents to just go after the big dogs.

I don't think they are that competent. I've never had to deal with the IRS and I hope I never do, but I have had to deal with the child support enforcement agency and they are ridiculously incompetent. I've never missed a child support payment but three or four times they've fucked up and sent letters to my employer saying they were going to garnish my wages. I've had to have accounting send them a record of every payment they've ever sent to prove the payments were made. (so far I've had the same job but I'm sure that will change and then it will be a bigger mess.) Somehow when I was initially entered into the CSEA system they put me in as being unemployed. Five or six years later they noticed and fixed it. I got a letter saying I owed back child support for all the years I was unemployed. I called them and they explained that they had noticed I was entered as unemployed and they fixed it but couldn't stop the letters from going out. I guess they couldn't be bothered to let me know either. I once requested a listing of all the payments they have ever received and they sent me a copy of a bunch of shit scribbled on paper. I know that because they thought I was behind on my child support that everything I pay goes to my daughter, including the money I pay them to adminster the payments and I am afraid when my daughter graduates from high school there is going to be a big flipping mess to straighten out what I do and don't owe and they are totally incompentent and there is nothing I can do about it.

The thought of being tied up in another bureaucratic mess for something I did not do is frightening to me.
