I'm way behind but I'm finally gonna do this. Has anyone done this? What are the pros and cons?

Main benefit is not having to wait for updates - roms with the latest Android are generally out pretty quick.

The other big benefit is underclocking when idle, which does wonders for your battery. Wireless tethering gives you a free work-around, which you can get with PDAnet but you have to pay for the premium version to access secure sites.

There are a lot more benefits, but I'm guessing if you've waited this long all the other tweaks won't interest you.

Drawbacks there really aren't any, other than some frustration if you screw something up and have to figure out how to fix it. The other, if you flash roms, is reloading your apps and settings (I suggest Titanium Backup for that task), and then setting up your home screens again.

Go to XDA forums. You should be able to find simple, easy to follow step-by-step directions to rooting, and then flashing roms if you so choose. If you're confused as to what roms, just start with CM10 (cyanogen mod).

It's pretty easy, really (once you find the step-by-step). The hardest part is probably installing ADB on your computer.

It could be even easier - lots of one-click root or automated apps to do it out there. Sorry I don't have the Note so I can't be much help.

You won't actually brick (which is the term for screwing it up beyond recovery) your phone, but you can definitely muck-up flashing roms and then get "stuck" trying to figure rout what you messed up.

LMAO, to unlock my phone it took me 3-4 tries to "short" it out with a paper clip.

Both the Note2 and S3 have one-click root options available. Do a search - sometimes the carrier matters.

I've always said the battery savings alone are worth it. But bear in mind there is nothing special beyond the 3 main benefits I mentioned earlier - although battery life and latest Android version are huge.

Gut pretty much explained everything. I think it is worth it. There are some great roms out there. I used to live on xda forums. Honestly with the one click roots its a piece of cake. It does void your warranty and insurance however you can always flash back to stock ROM and they will never know.

Getting rid of bloatware alone made it worthwhile to me. I hate having shit on my phone that I don't want on there and not being able to delete it.

Rooting is pretty easy once u read through the xda and if u find a one click, even easier... Any questions, just ask and I'll try to assist, as will others.

I agree with using titanium to back up user apps but don't back data(rom related data, could conflict with another rom).

I recommend using go launcher or nova bc u can back up ur screens and less setup. ALWAYS do a nandroid backup of ur rom before flashing a new one.

Cyanogenmod is the big one that's out and about.

AOKP is another big one.

Did you get it rooted?

I'm borrowing my father in law original Kindle fire and rooted it... So much better rooted with CyanogenMod, much faster and smoother with the fires limited ram and storage.

Rom is very easy, if you have stock rooted rom now, see if you have power option to hold power down and load to recovery... Do you already have twrp or cwm recovery? If so, dl rom to ur phone, then boot to recovery and install rom.
