Want to sign up for a suicide mission to Mars?

Might be a decent alternative to the US here in a few years.

I'd rather sign up for a suicide (bombing) mission to an OC gathering.

He's looking for people who are utterly dependable, good in groups, completly insane and ready for a suicide mission.

Those type of qualities may be hard to find together in a particular individual.

Hell I'd do it for a cool $30M.

I nominate Gibby, Isadore, and FWK.

Really my only concern at this point is leaving a legacy. Being one of the first humans on Mars would be remember until humans no longer exist. The $30M dollars could go a long way in trashing religious belief all over the globe; while I ride off into the sunset(read: Mars).

I just signed up Cats Gone Wild.

I say first person breaks not long after lift-off when the finality really sets in.

Do they expect to have a renewable source of supplies? Otherwise do they just starve or freeze to death when their stores are gone?

5000 years from now...Mars invades and - surprise - it's us! I mean, eventually they'll get really fucking tired of not having any water.

That would be my first question. How the hell does this thing end?

    from the article
"The technology to get humans to Mars and keep them alive there exists," Bas Lansdorp told Day 6 host Brent Bambury
So it sounds like they expect them to live.
The never-to-return explorers will require eight years of training
That's a long time to train, just to starve to death if things go wrong. I do wonder what it pays.

But for how long? I smell a loophole/technicality. I'd be curious to know how they replenish/recover water, and also oxygen. Even if they could recover 99% of water from waste and evaporation it wouldn't take long to run thru stores.

Flip-side would be, if they are young enough, in 20-30 years they should have the tech to bring them back. I'd guess that might be how volunteers would rationalize it.

I was interested until I saw 8 years of training were required.

What are you going to buy on Mars?

I'm not going to do it, but if I did it would be to leave a large chunk of money for my kids.

    So close, too. Bummer.

    What is the pay?

Pretty sure any life insurance policy one would have would be null and void if ya did this

    No shit.

If I'm doing a suicide mission, I want to fucking do it NOW! Don't give me eight years to think things over and decide I might be able to find something to live for, you idiots!

I'm curious what the training actually entails and why it needs to be 8 years.

Probably mostly maintaining and repairing all the life support equipment. Hydroponics could be the worst part - think how many people struggle to grow stuff here on Earth.
