I work with another woman, in her early 30s. She's easy to get along with but she can be a suckabitch sometimes. Last weekend she called off work for like 5 days being sick -- and she was actually admitted to the hospital, so I don't blame her. What irritates me is two days after getting released from hospital, she went on a 5-day trip to Vegas they had been planning.
So you can't travel after being sick? got. This is an idiot statement.

She was in the hospital, recovers, then 2 day after she travels...

Was she supposed to ditch the flight, room, plans?

This didn't even make sense, and I never said that anyways. What were you saying about idiot statements?

Typically, after being admitted to the hospital for nearly a week, the least sensible thing to do two days later is travel across the country.

Speaker-mode phone calls when people are nearby ... nothing irritates me more, sans maybe "rally" meetings. If you have a meeting, it needs a point directly related to how we operate. I don't need a pep talk. This is my job. I have plenty of motivation. It's called pride and a benefits package.

Just straight up incompetency. I deal with a lot of customer service representatives. What they tell me directly impacts what I relay to my clients. So when I set an expectation to my client (based on info I've received from my back office), I expect that information to be valid...or at the very least, realistic. I can't tell you how many times I've had to deal with people who've given me information only to find out (after calling/researching the issue further) later that what they gave me was total BS.

It annoys me because I don't like setting bad expectations for my clients. It's one thing if something outside of the company affects my clients' problems, it's a totally different thing if WE, as the company, screw it up for the customer. That makes us look bad, and I'm the one who has to get an ear full.

To build on this. Today, the worst of these gossip-whores is on the road and texted her gossip-buddy that Kanye dumped Kim K. After quite the exciting few minutes around the office, gossip-buddy finds out where she heard this info (after not finding anything on her favorite Hollywood gossip website). SHE FUCKING READ A TABLOID COVER AND THOUGHT IT WAS REAL NEWS!!!!!

Some days, I fear the hate will overcome me and I will completely turn to the dark side...

Totally agree here. I am not in an industry anymore that I have to deal with them alot but when I had it would be extremely poor business, and embarassing, when CS reps over the phone would give out totally BS info or have not a clue at what they were saying.

I just love it when people believe that garbage, or repost an article from The Onion thinking it is legit. To expound on that there were two instances like this. Yesterday a lady friend of mine posted a bunch of warnings on Facebook, actually forwarded, about how some guy in a red car was driving around town, our town, offering candy to kids and trying to lure them in the car. SHe posted a few times warning everyone about it.

WHen i actually read it i didnt notice the street they were talking about so i looked, and it was from a town wiht the same name in a totally different state.

and jsut a few min ago a buddy from my unit posted a link from an onion-like website regarding military news. It was about due to budget cuts that bases were charging $$$ for soldiers to come on board. He got a number of responses bitching about it....only to find out it was an article from a fake site.

Why? Clearly you're healthy. So because she was sick she should give up all the money she's spent on the trip?
  • thavoice
yeah..I would go on that vacation as well.

Not clearly. Being discharged after a significant stint in the hospital involves going home and continuing to rest & take it easy. You're rarely discharged at 100%, especially with nausea and vomiting being the original admitting diagnosis.

All that aside, they got back from Vegas today, and she's already called in sick for work tomorrow and Thursday.

Now, It is BS that she called in sick for tomorrow and Thursday already. Unless one is in the hospital I never understood calling in sick a day early, or even two days early. I can see calling the night before and give a heads up to an employer that you are sick and may call into sick the next day. There have been plenty of times I was sick enough the night prior and woke up feeling good enough to work the next day.

Looking back...I dont know if I have ever called in sick when i was reall sick......it had only been when I was suffering from the brown bottle flu!

I still wont condemn her for goin on the trip after a hospital stay.

...and is there even proof she was in the hospital? It would not be surprising if an employee, especially a dirtball, would take an extended vacation and call in sick for days before and/or after for a few extra days.

That is why I had an employer who would not pay you for some of your vacation if you called in sick the day before or after you took a vacation, and I know some places wont pay holiday pay if you call in sick the day before or after.

Check her gender. I swear women get more vacation time than any man ever could. They are constantly "sick" and they always have an excuse.

There are days I wake up feeling like shit, but I still drag my ass to work. My sick time and vacation time are combined so I want to use it to have fun. If I'm going to be miserable I might as well be at work getting paid for it.

Yeah, for me, it's 3 weeks vac and 1 week sick, so if I'm using sick time, it's for one of two reasons:

    1. I'm really, really sick and there's no other way to go.
    2. I'm not super sick, but under the weather and I'll be super-busy in the near future, so my top priority is getting to 100% asap so I'm not run down when it's time to be super-busy.

Anything else and I'm risking wasting vacation time on being sick.

She was admitted to the hospital I work at. But I agree with what you said about calling in days in advance. I think the thing to do is call in, and give a heads up that you're feeling pretty miserable and may not be in for another day or two. But some people straight up say "I won't be in today or tomorrow."

Yeah..I was just curious becuase it sounded almost like she was having an extended vacation and used calling in sick to extend it past what she was to have!

There is also always that awkward decision to make. Something comes up at the last minute and you want off. Do you risk asking off for it (for those people who have a more stringet policy) and not getting it and then you are screwed, or do you call in sick that day?!?

Reply to all email chains. When someone is recognized for doing something great(which I am ok with), people just don't reply to that person only saying great job, they need to reply all so everyone can see them congratulating that person.

^^haha, we used to have that at my old job. Annoyed the hell outta me.
