Meteor Explodes Over Russia

  Apparently, at about 09:30 local time, a very big meteor burned up over Chelyabinsk, a city in Russia just east of the Ural mountains, and about 1500 kilometers east of Moscow. The fireball was incredibly bright, rivaling the Sun! There was a pretty big sonic boom from the fireball, which set off car alarms and shattered windows. I’m seeing some reports of many people injured (by shattered glass blown out by the shock wave). I’m also seeing reports that some pieces have fallen to the ground, but again as I write this those are unconfirmed.
  Note: This is almost certainly unrelated to the asteroid 2012 DA14 that will pass on Friday

  almost certainly not related? i dont know exactly what that means but to me it seems like it is more likely to be related than not related

  Meteors enter the atmosphere every day. They mostly burn up or land in the oceans which make up the majority of the planet. Far more likely to be a coincidence than not.
  
  Why would the experts say they're not related if they are? Are they not really experts? Are they lying? If so, to what purpose?

  not saying they are lying..this is an extremely large meteor to be a coincedence imo. I cant think of another in my lifetime that was this big and blew out windows, not saying it hasnt happend before. besides if they were sure it wouldnt say almost certainly. it would say this meteor is not related.

  The only experts I've seen interviewed have said it with complete certainty.
  
  In rough numbers, when the event happened in Russia, the big asteriod was as far from Earth as the moon is. It's a big asteriod, but not close to big enough to have any effect like this on Earth from that distance.

  well we really dont know much about asteroids quite honestly, and when i say related i mean that maybe whatever event sent that asteroid through space possibly sent this one too?? not that it was a piece of that asteroid or anything like that. so i guess when they say its not related im not sure what they mean either

  as far as being able to see it , it would be very difficult. in the scope of things thats pretty small and wouldnt show up probably until it hit the atmosphere and started burning. they didnt even see the really big one until very recently, which is why i find it hard to believe they can speak with any certainty that there arent more smaller asteroids coming this week possibly

  Read a big article the other day (related to the big mamajama). They said only about 10% of the really big ones (there are thousands) have been identified, and the paths/predictions for only about 10% of that.
  
  They also pegged a huge one hitting us at 30% in the next 100 years (something the equivalent of 10,000 atomic bombs). Not an extinction event, but very, very bad wherever it hits. The armageddon asteroid is something like 1%.
  
  Hopefully this is the big one they had us at 30% for. Of course, technically still 30% chance of the next one (if that's accurate).

"In videos of the meteor, it is seen to pass from left to right in front of the rising sun, which means it was traveling from north to south. Asteroid DA14's trajectory is in the opposite direction, from south to north," the U.S. space agency said.

  Given the vast amount of space and crap flying around in that space, that's a pretty reasonable assertion.
