Are you a Prepper

  • vball10set
I have quite a few guns and bought over a thousand rounds of ammo for them in the past year.
Nope. I'm going to team up with mcburg93 and we're going to go around and take whatever we want or need from the preppers.

With trade and everything else falling apart, those canned goods are as good as gold (just think how much it would cost to buy new in those times and you would have been better off stocking up rather than investing in gold/silver).

Stock up and then lay low. That would be my plan. Scavenging just to BUY food doesn't sound remotely appealing, or safe.
Financial collapse gold and silver would not be worth much (after the collapse would bring more value) but cigarettes, alcohol, drinking water and canned good will be the bartering goods. </SPAN>

Yep. Today an oz of gold might buy you 50 cartons of cigarettes....after a collapse, an oz of gold might buy you 1 carton.

So I should start stockpiling cartons of cigarettes?

I'd recommend stockpiling a life first.

I'm along this line. But I only have about 200 bottles of Bombers in my stash.

I do try to keep some fire logs and candles in stock in case of a power outage. Saved my ass years ago when Hurricane Ike made it's way through Ohio.

Beer will get you through times of no money, better than money will get you through times of no beer!

I have a generator and stock up on non perishable foods. More prepaired for bad weather situations not Alien Invasions or Zombie Apocalypse.

For those that are going to start prepping or do prep, what are your fears? Solar flare? Government take over? tsunami? mega volcano?

Economic collapse seems the most likely scenario.

please - boatshoes says we can just print more money, so this won't happen.

This is really the only scenario I realistically worry about.

Same here. I just want to make sure I've got enough food/water on hand to not have to leave my house for a while. If there is a collapse I'll try my damnedest to load everything up and head up to my mom's. Seems like it would be much safer than staying in the city.

My life style in general was the beginning of being prepare somewhat. After a few winter storms without power and some heavy summer rain/wind storms seemed to be the beginning reason for storage of some supplies for the family.
I have seen the chaotic destruction of riots and the extent of what desperate people can do. As demonstrated in the racial riots, political demonstration and Rodney King events, represents only a minor scenario of a economic collapses.
Natural and Solar events do and can happen the level of extreme is the question, what is the severity in which world and human can survive. But again even a small Natural or Solar event can trigger civil disorder.
I&#8217;m preparing just to be prepared for whatever should be the case and give myself and family the edge to live that one extra day together. That one day could be the difference of living a life time. </SPAN>

I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. He will protect us as long as we aren't sinners.

An economic collapse wouldn't be that disastrous, in a prepper sense. There have been many defaults in 3rd world and emerging economies. Money would be an issue for many, but goods and services would continue to be available and provided. There would be a lot of pain and shortages, but very survivable for a non-prepper. But pretty much every non-millionaire would be financially ruined.

A power outage is a real fear, though. We've seen storms do this, but the power grid gets more fragile as it ages. I couldn't do it right now, but I feel like one should have enough water and canned goods to last 2 weeks. A little scary if you think about a city like NY or LA losing power - there might be some serious problems in just a week. A prolonged nationwide power loss would also cripple transportation, which means no food/goods moving around (gas doesn't flow because the pumps are electric).

A massive volcano explosion (like the one running throughout the West/Yellowstone) would be an extinction event. The preppers would only be prolonging their agony by 6-12 months. But If they don't have hydroponics they're just as dead eventually.

I really know nothing of this Yellowstone Caldera. Why would it erupting be an extinction event?

Called google; but essentially the explosion would be so great the ash would black out the sky. Good bye sun.

It's a mega super volcano, and the ash that would be ejected into the atmosphere would block light globally - plants and plankton die, and then everything else follows. Air and soil become toxic. Think nuclear winter. Nearly all of North America would be blanketed with ash.

Might not be an extinction event globally, but then an ice age would probably also follow.

Erupts every 600k years almost like clockwork. Last eruption was 640k years ago.
