I was obviously talking about the same plan since you said you didn't want to sacrifice quality. Obviously, if you pay cash for everything your insurance costs will be cheaper(read: $0) but your quality(read: you will be bankrupt from a strep throat infection) will go down. You will never win.

But my point is that it will get worse with Obamacare. I do agree about it outpacing wages. Everything seems to be outpacing wages.

The research I have done so far tells me that plans between $350-400 a month are basically what I have now, only without the maternity coverage. So we would be saving money and unless my wife gets pregnant, in which case I would be royally f*****

    EZ.

I mean is it worth it to save $1,200 dollars a year just to go it on your own?

I've always had a $5,000 deductable...just got married and put my wife on my plan...is it worth the extra $270 a month to go from a $5,000 to a $2,500? She has allergies pretty bad and just started taking the shots that are supposed to eventually make her immune, problem is, it could be one round or 20 rounds of those shots.

    270 x 12 = 3240

    3240 > 2500

    I had it wrong.

    $5,000 deductible is $68.40 per week $3283
    $2,500 is $95.70 per week $4,593

    makes more sense

It's a gamble. If you think there's a strong possibility you'll meet the deductible then it's probably worth it.

I might switch to the $2,500 this year since shes still taking the shots then hope they work and move to the 5,000 again the following year....She also has a teaching degree and is most likely going to end up with a teaching position next year and maybe I will end up on here insurance

probably worth it. If you happen to lose the gamble the grand ain't going to break you.

I am thinking about looking for health insurance myself outside of the company. I am 23, wife is 24, and my son is 4 and we are not planning on having any more children within the next few years.

Some quick online quotes show that I can get health insurance for the family for much cheaper. I don't want to sacrifice quality to much, but we have never used the insurance outside of normal checkups and if I could save 2-3k I should do it.

Anybody have experience in getting health insurance outside of an employer? Advice on things I should look for?
Yours is really cheap in my opinion. If you still prefer an insurance outside of your company, you must compare the two first if they can cover the needs at a cheaper price but I know those who are insured under their company's benefits are lucky enough to get the best rates and the best service in times of need.

I think everybody on the huddle has significantly cheaper insurance than me. :(

It's not that they have cheaper insurance, it's that their employers pick up more of it.

I pay 77 cents for health insurance every 2 weeks.

Unless you or your wife has been sterilized, you will need maternity coverage. If there is an "accidental" pregnancy you do NOT want that medical bill.

Maternity coverage is what makes getting your own family coverage SKY ROCKET in costs.

I had a guy I used to work with that was a sub contractor for years for GM/Ford and always had to buy his own insurance, this is coming straight from him.

$5000 deductible is what I have now through the end of this year. It will increase Jan 1.
Yes, absolutely it will cost more. What you are missing is that your company is putting up about 75% of your premium, you are only paying about 25%.

I have similar costs for full family coverage, I pay about $500/month and the company is paying 75% of the premium.

You will lose SO MUCH coverage if you try to get anything even close to $7000/yr for family coverage on your own.

You have to remember, your company is getting a discount because they are buying many plans in a bundle. You would not get that multi plan discount.

These are plans that are available from the exact same company that my company goes through. Whoever said about the maternity insurance earlier was definitely right, the maternity insurance adds like $550 a month to these plans.
Unless you or her got fixed, you should not leave maternity off.

You have no idea how much out of pocket that "accident" would cost in medical bills. We are talking $10,000+.

    Says you and not CBO.

I am assuming that your employer's plan is a Section 125 plan. If it is, those premiums are pretax. The premiums you pay out of pocket are also deductible, but the 7.5% rule kicks in. You must factor in the tax implications as well.
