Career change

Commander of AwesomeI'm in sort of the same boat. I feel I've changed my career path a few times and still am trying to figure out what I like/what to do.

I'm in the same boat. Not quite a "career change", but I'm aiming to switch departments...marketing to sales. I'll be THRILLED to work from home/on the road. I don't despise coming to the office everyday, but I can see it wearing on me eventually...especially with my current job function. Besides, sales is where the money and freedom is anyway...so I've been told.justincredible;1295862 wrote: Something that doesn't involve sitting at a desk all day would be a start, I guess.
I've found out it's better to be proactive rather than sit and wait for something to come to you. I'd never get anywhere in my current situation in regards to advancement/compensation. I saw the need in the other department and said 'f*ck it'....time to go for the switch. -

I know what you mean, in my past job the only way to advance was for people ahead of me to retire. I was there 3 yrs and when I left I was still the newest hire. Hours were great, 8-4 everyday and never had to work on weekends. However I spent most of my day on OC and was bored to tears. I needed more of a challenge in my job. Now I'm currently at a place where I've been working weekends, 12 hour days etc.... /QQing and it also sucks. I also have about an hour 15 min commute each way which bites. //QQ. Looking at other options trying to find a happy medium between the two.Automatik;1295990 wrote:I'm in the same boat. Bob is getting heat for recusing himself from the governors task force on fractured well research. It isn't necessarily a good time to be in the academic end of petroleum engineering given the climate in higher education. Blowhards from Ohio University have been coming out of the wood work to refute his API sponsored research. Education elite have made it a point to champion green initiatives and Bob is caught in a tough spot being an expert witness, consultant, and appointed chair of state sponsored research on the positives and negatives of fracking.justincredible;1295970 wrote:Dr Chase was a boss. My first advisor. I really wish I hadn't slacked off my first three semesters and stuck with petro.
If you are going to go into Petroleum engineering stick in the business end, academia isn't any better on you. -
sleeperAh I see Justin is finally interested in getting a real job..

OSHI may have to, it depends on where this job season takes me to. I applied to my first position on Friday. If I don't find a job by May-July 2013, then I am going to have to look for a different career...I am afraid. In the last two job application seasons, I've applied to over 100 places and have gotten about 4 callbacks/interviews -- I've had jobs at two of those 4 places I've interviewed. I'm definitely more qualified now than I was before applying, so I hope the sun shines on me.
I have something I'd like to start-up, but we'll see how this search goes. I know I'd like to stay in the higher education industry. -

Cat Food Flambe'I got out of the transportation business at age 34 - while I sure as hell wasn't sitting at a desk all day, I can tell you that the thrill of being called out of bed at 2 a.m two or three times a month to get to a personal injury or accident scene 200 miles away is vastly overrated. I went into health care administration - while it was a serious pay cut at first and meant a year or two being chained to a desk, it opened up a whole bunch of options that I never knew existed.
Life is too short to put up with a job you hate - and it's a lot better to do it when you're younger and don't have to worry about supporting kids. -
Abe VigodaI am in the p*rn industry. It has it's ups and downs but at least I am doing something I enjoy.

I'll give you a boatload of baseball cards. Some/most of them smell heavily of cat urine, cigarette smoke, and damp basement mold though so you could probably only get away with describing them as "near mint".justincredible;1296155 wrote:I'll make zeros of dollars. -

CherI would entertain the idea of a career change, but only if the pay was right.
I have two interviews next week, one of which would be a "career change". Pretty excited. -

BE careful, its a slippery slope. At my new current job, I'm able to work from home which means they expect me to work from home and expect that I'm always on call. They think its so great that I can leave work after being here 8-9 hours and work rest of day from home "with my family". Not even kidding. Talk about a fucking joke.Raw Dawgin' it;1296414 wrote:My job can be done from home but they're excuse for not giving me VPN access and working from home is "if we let you we have to let everyone"

I hear ya. The worst is on the weekend when unexpected stuff starts coming in ... "can we get this by EOD? Need to have for our meeting tomorrow AM" they say at 3pm Sunday when I'm four beers in and engrossed in NFL RedZone. Fuck you. I'm enjoying my weekend.Commander of Awesome;1296436 wrote:BE careful, its a slippery slope.
