Cover up a crime

  • pmoney25
My wife and I discussed this while watching a Law and Order episode the other day.

Would you cover up a crime or hide the truth from the law if someone you loved/cared about committed a crime?

If yes, where would you draw the line if at all? Robbery, Theft, Assault, Murder? Friends/Family?

    If no, Why not?

No. They can deal with the consequences of their actions.

If the answer is 'yes', posting in this thread probably isn't the greatest idea. Just sayin' . . .

Way too fact-dependent for a one size fits all answer. The world is just not that black and white.

This. Lots of variables (severity of crime, severity of punishment, mitigating factors, reasons why the mitigating factors might be overlooked, potential outcomes from justice system, etc.).

I think it depends on the crime and the person.

I had a friend in high school who lost his license for speeding too many times. He kept driving without his license and got another ticket. (actually the last ticket was for driving my jeep over a sidewalk on campus.) He then drove one more time without his license and when the cops saw him, they recognized him and immediately turned on their lights and started chasing him. He outran them and hid his car in my garage. He called his parents and the cops had gone to his house to look for him. He eventually got off because they didn't actually see him, they just recognized his car. It was dumb for him to keep driving but he wasn't really hurting anyone and to this day I don't feel bad for hiding him.

If someone molests one of my friend's kids and he shoots the molestor I would have no problem grabbing a shovel and helping him bury the body.

Justin - oral sex is still illegal in 16 states. Would you turn in your wife for giving you a little oral affection while you're on vacation in Florida?

I would in no shape or form become an accessory, especially for more serious crimes.

Now if I knew of a crime, it would depend on who and what. If I had evidence I'd probably hand it to the police. If not, I'd try to convince them to turn themselves in and seek help.
