Future iconic songs of the past decade?

You might be right. Maybe they're comparable to a lot of the 80's hairbands. Perfect example of music that got A LOT BETTER over time because of nostalgia.Scarlet_Buckeye;1286214 wrote: As for other "classic" pop songs... I know it may sound corny, but I'm sure you be hearing plenty of Britney Spears, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift.
Like Bon Jovi is awesome now. But I honestly can't remember if I thought very much of them in the 80's. A couple of songs, sure, but a lot of that (and most of the Top Gun soundtrack) was just sappy shit. Maybe a fair comparison with the club garbage that dominates today. -
gport_tennisI think lmfao, just their two hit songs though. I can see hearing those at sporting events for a long time

BoatShoesPersonally I don't think music was very good in the last decade. However, I still think the fact that you build memories around the songs of the time that I'll enjoy hearing those songs later on. For instance, I'll always go back and think about spring break when I hear songs that were popular at the time.

What about Mumford & Sons? They're early, but what they've done so far is fantastic.
Mumford and sons.
Black Keys
My Morning Jacket
These will have songs and albums that will get played forever. -
HereticIf it's modern music of the past decade or so and I'm listening to it, it's probably underground black/death/etc. metal. That stuff tends to not get public acclaim and popularity, therefore, I'm probably not listening to anything that will be considered iconic by the masses. Too bad for them...

raiderbuckAdele. I can see her sticking around for a long time.
Taylor Swift as well. Mainly because of her writing ability. The bands and artists that last the test of time are the ones who are talented writers as well as musicians. -

It's just you, there's been a lot of absolutely phenomenal music in the past decade or so.gut;1285608 wrote:So is it just me, or has music almost completely sucked for the past 10-15 years? Or I wonder if, like the 80's, some of this music will seem much better 20 years from now than it is today.
What songs & artists will still be playing on the radio 20 years from now? I'm sure there will be some genre stations, so maybe the better question is what would you enjoy hearing 20 years from now?
Like, does Lady Gaga or Katy Perry really stand the test of time? I say no.
Elliott Smith
Modest Mouse
The Strokes
Radiohead
Jay-Z
Kanye
TV On The Radio
Brand New
and a silly amount more were all creating awesome albums and songs in the 2000s. If you think music sucks now you've simply stopped trying to find good music and been listening to the same stuff you always had been or whatever came on the radio.
Except for Radiohead. Kid A was 2000 and In Rainbows was 2004.Sonofanump;1285805 wrote:All of those bands had their prime more than 15 years ago. So, yes music in the last 10-15 has sucked.
Oh and I definitely think LCD Soundsystem will have some lasting influence. They made dance music that actually mattered. -

Of the list I quoted, my personal preference would to put radiohead at the bottom, yes even below U2.I Wear Pants;1287128 wrote:Except for Radiohead. Kid A was 2000 and In Rainbows was 2004. -

You have no ideas the terrible deeds I'm wishing upon you right now. And to think I had just given you reps, makes me nauseous.Sonofanump;1287375 wrote:I hate stouts and pumpkins and spiced beers. -
sjmvsfscs08I Wear Pants wins.
"I've only seen Mumford on Conan" lolol do yourself a favor and actually listen to music. 2010 was an amazing year for music, 2012/2013 looks to be amazing too. -
SonofanumpI'd be interested to see a top ten list from pants, pmoney and sjcs for songs over the last decade.

BigAppleBuckeyeI think this thread answers the OP's question unintentionally -- the question was to name iconic songs, and no one can, I just see a bunch of semi-talented bands and artists listed.
Really good question ... Now in my 30s, I can hear myself sounding old, but I hate today's music (I admit I am a product of 90s grunge). That being said, here is a handful of music from the past 10-12 years (I think anyway) that may stand the test of time:
Eminem - Lose Yourself
The Killers - Mr. Brightside
50 Cent - In Da Club
Alicia Keys - Fallin
Ummm ... that's about all I can come up with, and even those songs wouldn't crack the top 100 or the 80s or 90s. -
gutThere has been a lot of good club music the past 10-15 years (Eminem has 3 or 4 of them). Maybe that's comparable to disco, but more staying power.

That's because I rarely listen to just a single song. Much more of an album person really.BigAppleBuckeye;1287496 wrote:I think this thread answers the OP's question unintentionally -- the question was to name iconic songs, and no one can, I just see a bunch of semi-talented bands and artists listed.
