Little things you do raising your kids

  • Apple
Seems like there are quite a few OC'ers who are raising kids. What are your suggestions for little things that you can do to help raise a child?

I just saw a dad pick up his kid at a school bus stop. The kid, probably a 5 year old, greeted the dad with a hug... around his leg!

My suggestion would be for the dad to put a knee to the ground so the kid can look him in his eyes and hug him around the shoulders. Get down to the kid's level.

Little things matter and treating them on the proper level is important.

Another thing is "baby talk". It dumbfounds me why the hell grown adults start talking "baby talk" to their young little kids who are learning how to talk. It drove me crazy when adults would revert to talking stupid to my kids when they were little. Mispronouncing words to a child is just wrong. Pronounce your words correctly and the kid will know how to speak!

Let them watch whatever they want on television, regardless of the content ;)

My girlfriend has 6 year old twin daughters. I tell them every day to "be cool at school".. they think it's so funny. My dad told my sister and me that from kindergarten through our senior years.

Traditions are important. From the time we set up the Christmas decorations to Christmas day I use to always have the Wise Men in a different place each day on their journey across the liveng room (or where ever) to the Manger. The kids would ask why they hadn't moved if a day went by that I missed.

That's wrong. The Wise Men didn't arrive until the Epiphany on January 6. Not Christmas Day.
    Ought to teach it correctly.

eh... The whole Christmas thing is an iffy thing with Santa and all. When they are young, there are grey areas that parents need to decide what is best. Santa, Easter bunny etc. Church doctrine/history is another topic too

Ok... I get your analogy. I guess it just demonstrates that there is a lot of grey area when it comes to raising kids, what you allow them to be exposed to etc.

    Baby talk still sucks.

With three daughters when we felt it was time and the interest in dating started. With each girl I purchased a gold cross and chain, got all dressed up, took then to the best restaurant, ordered the best, presented with cross and chain. Told them that this is the standard they should expect. What ever they do God and their dad will always be there forever. Wear this as a reminder of who loves you.

By the time they are in Middle School always know who their friends are and even a little something about who their friends parents are.

Some people believe in corporal punishment as a parenting technique. If you disagree with it, that can be shared and expressed. Please do not use it as an opportunity to make sexually suggestive comments though.

I'm sorry, Mr. Moderator, Sir... but can you provide evidence of any sexually suggestive comments?

Remember that kids need parents that are parents, not parents that try to be their friends....big difference. Don't be afraid to be the one who says 'no', and tell your kids that if they're in an uncomfortable situation, don't be afraid to use them (the parent) as an out, or an excuse.

There was one in this thread that I deleted. However, to provide the example would be counter productive as that material is being removed to try to get adsense back as a source of revenue. If I put in the example again, then that material would come up on further reviews of this site by adsense and might adversely affect the chances of getting adsense back. But I will say everything now on the thread is okay. The one that was removed was clearly over the line.

If the comment is related to pornography then it's probably not okay.
