With Playstation 4 launch looming, Sony says it will support PS3 for atleast three more years

    http://m.bgr.com/2012/09/24/playstation-3-support-2015-playstation-4-launch/

I'm ready to see if Sony can release something that will be able to compete with the next XBox. Love my ps3 but online gaming is still better on the 360 but love free gaming.

Looks like I have 3 more years of gaming. I dont see myself buying a new console.

If it has 4k, that'd be so awesome.

I'm not sure what would be the point of 4k gaming. You don't need to go past 720p.

    Why?

I only play 2-3 games regularly. NCAA, FIFA (comes out tonight btw), and NBA 2k. I dont know if that is enough for me to warrant buying a new gaming system. Hard to tell, though. Still a few years away probably.

Are there even any tv's yet that could display 4k? 1080p is already almost like looking thru a window - I'd guess 4k would be indistinguishable.

Hopefully if and when they discontinue supporting the PS3 they'll unlock the darn thing (doubtful). I keep waiting for them to crack it, but doesn't look like it will happen (unless you want to use that hardware kit out there to revert it). Maybe someday I'll get motivated to do that - I don't use it for hardly anything other than movies, music and occasional surfing.

Just man up and buy it... I really only play NCAA now bc I'm busy with the family and will be day 1 purchase for me.

Plus you'll have a real job then...

I just read an article last week speculating that PS4 might not even come out until 2014.

I'm in the same boat. I couldn't even tell you the last time I fired up my PS3 for non-movie use.

I had mine for 3 years without playing a single game. When my xbox quit right after NCAA football came out I bought it for PS3 and couldn't find the remote. Still in original package in the PS3 box.

PS I'm by no means a grammar nazi and I find imex's posts painful to read. You gotta sure that shit up dude.

I have no interest in the PS4, but I do want the new "Super Slim" PS3. My fatass first gen 60gig is still kickin.

    What?

All I want for the next gen consoles are basically:
Faster CPUs (obviously going to happen)
    SSD
At least 4 GB of RAM (Current gen consoles have about 512 mb)
If there's a disc drive it better be Blu Ray
Video card that at least is similar to a $250 card today (Consoles usually are able to push specs a bit further since they're specialized).

Am I the only one here who still plays PS2?

    No, seriously.

    Sounds way too expensive.

I don't use my PS3 much other than for blu rays...so I doubt I buy it. Although, I will be buying Hitman in a few weeks...so maybe I will get back into a gaming a little

I'd be interested, with the rumored specs, if it could double as a pc. Or at least run Android.

Otherwise, count me with those who haven't played a game on it in years and use it solely for movies. Although I do store music on it (swapped a 250gig hd from an old laptop). I watched some NFL Sunday Ticket on it last year, as well.

Wish the web interface didn't suck. Although my tv is internet-ready, wish I could watch Xfinity or HBO thru my playstation (since the libraries are expanded online vs. cable). Unfortunately neither has a PS3 app or is compatible with the plugins. Not jailbreaking my PS3 when I had the chance was a bad mistake.

    How so?

Those components can be had for well below $600 which is oftentimes the cost to manufacture that systems which launch with $299 or $399 price points begin with. Traditionally Sony and Microsoft have launched consoles by initially taking massive loses on each one sold and then recouping them via software and eventually earning profits on the hardware as it becomes more dated/new manufacturing techniques are developed.
