I just got a Macbook for free (had to replace the hard drive so it ended up costing $50) and I'd like to know what you Mac using hipsters think are some of the best programs or tips to make this thing better.

What kind of programs? What are you going to be using it for?

Growl and Quicksilver is a good place to start.
  • Automatik
    VLC player
    Transmission for torrents

Can you upgrade to Mountain Lion? Messages for gchat/imessage is solid.

    Both necessary apps.

TextWrangler is better than the built in TextEdit.

    I don't think I can upgrade to 10.8, it's a Core 2 Duo white plastic one.

    Also I like uTorrent.

So did I. Until I switched to Transmission.

And yeah, you can't upgrade that sucker. It's probably the same model my wife has.

Just put Office and Photoshop on it. Runs pretty nicely it seems. Will make a nice school laptop.
