So I have to give a speech tomorrow...

Most politicians go up and say the same shit over and over again. You go up to the stand and say generic, non-educated statements and "speak down" to their level.said_aouita;1257261 wrote:You've already heard their speeches?
"Talk to your audience like they're people" - What do you mean by this statement?
Don't bang the desk and say "I WONT RAISE TAXES". Just calmly say "I think the taxes are a bit too high, and I'd like to reduce them a bit within reason." -
fan_from_texasBe sincere. Practice a million times. Practice is by far the most important thing about public speaking. Nothing else is even close.

That'll help him a bunch, seeing as how his speech was today.fan_from_texas;1258216 wrote:Be sincere. Practice a million times. Practice is by far the most important thing about public speaking. Nothing else is even close.
Pay attention. -
Barry BadrinathSpeech went well. Won the "election." Appreciate the input.

vball10setcongrats--where do you attend grad school, and in what discipline?
-
Barry BadrinathI go to Ohio State. Would rather not give the discipline as it would reveal my identity to a few people on here.

This is easy... Let them know that you are a member on the OC, assuming that not many people have heard of it, they will think it is some special organization and will want you leading them this year. When that doesn't work you have only one choice, you tell them that you are in discussions with the administration about the school hosting "Free Beer Fridays" and "Stripper Saturdays" but they won't finalize it until you are elected, then when you are elected, you just blame the administration for not being able to provides those things.Barry Badrinath;1257075 wrote:I'm "running" for President of a student organization that represents my graduate program. I have plenty of relevant job, internship, and life experiences so I'm not too concerned on that front. I have always been very personable and extroverted and have no problem meeting and talking to people. I also teach classes at the undergraduate level and don't have a problem speaking in front of my students either. But for some reason I always get nervous when I have to present or speak in front of my peers.
I guess I'm just looking for advice on how to differentiate myself from my competition (running against two other students). Any advice on what to include or not to include, what to say or not say, how I should refer or incorporate my past experiences and stuff of that nature. Speech is only going to be a minute or two. -
TiernanDid you give your speech like you were speaking to an empty chair? I heard that always works well.
