MMA......Olympic Sport??? Lets ROCK!!!
-
hang_looseWill it happen? There is wrestling, judo, boxing and karate..... Why not? It would combine four different styles into one different sport. That would fill the empty seats. Plus I would rather watch the MMA matches than the other four (and I like wrestling).
Mods, move this to another forum if it is in the wrong place.
Thanks! -
brutus161No, bacuse if the brutality of it. Boxing was nerfed by the head gear. MMA could not be really performed well without the possibility of a KO.
-
Fly4FunBrutus sums it up pretty nicely.
THe other fighting sports you mentioned are more about the point system than the physical violence where it is the opposite with MMA. -
OSHI think the biggest thing is the time it would take to put on a tournament AND of what brutus said.
MMA isn't built around having guys fight 2-3 (or more) times in a week. -

Actually, that's exactly what MMA was built on.OSH;1244606 wrote:

Not built on it anymore. It definitely wouldn't be healthy.superman;1244610 wrote:Actually, that's exactly what MMA was built on. -
hang_looseOSH, Good point about the time to put on a tournament but if there is a will, there's a way.

said_aouitaQuite a few different MMA organizations. Strikeforce, Pride and UFC are probably the big-3?
Good luck getting them to agree on one set of rules and testing.
Like brutus said, the brutality of MMA will prevent it from being added. -

Strikeforce, Pride (doesn't exist anymore), and UFC are all owned by the same company.said_aouita;1245121 wrote:Quite a few different MMA organizations. Strikeforce, Pride and UFC are probably the big-3?

The problems are
1.) Violence - very violent sport with sometimes brutal KO's. As said above, any headgear totally changes the sport.
2.) Logistics - can't really fight that many times in two weeks. Maybe you could have qualifying in the months before and just have the semi-finals, finals during the week? Seems tough.
3.) Injuries - same for any sport but chances of getting hurt in competition are higher in MMA. For instance, it would so easy for a guy to win but break his hand in the process and not be able to advance.
4.) Money - does Dana really let his best assets get used for free at a high risk by the Olympics? Mark Cuban goes nuts that Olympics get to use NBA players for free, while the NBA bears all the risk of injury. -

They are all put on weeks, if not months of medical bans after their fights now after they are checked out post fight, so it's a different situation. -

Thank you. Thought strikeforce was still around, just totally forgot about Pride joining UFC.
I can get M Cuban not liking the risk involved, professionals playing for their country. He's a business man. Hopefully Stern's push on age limit restrictions for the Olympics fails.
If a player wants to play in the Olympics, NBA teams should not be allowed to prevent that from happening.
Also believe the NBA teams should be allowed to void all costs and responsibility in case of injury. Can also void the contract all together, if a player is injured in the Olympics.
Also.....getting back to Dana and MMA, UFC and it's drug testing methods are questionable. Why has all of Leben's failed drug tests been when fighting outside of the US? -

Why does it have to be the top UFC/Strikeforce fighters?Zoltan;1245135 wrote:4.) Money - does Dana really let his best assets get used for free at a high risk by the Olympics? Mark Cuban goes nuts that Olympics get to use NBA players for free, while the NBA bears all the risk of injury.
There aren't many fighters that represent different nations fighting under those organizations. There are some, but there are many other fighters from other countries that are "amateur" who could break out in the Olympics IF there was a MMA event. I could see Dana White actually utilizing it to bring new fighters to the UFC.
Nice little scouting opportunity. There are so many Olympians who just pick up the sport because there needs to be representation -- read a story about a guy from Niger who rowed, only been rowing for 3 months before the Olympics started. -

Oh, and thanks for the "education" you gave me.superman;1245168 wrote:I was just educating someone on the history of the sport.
Now that there are so many restrictions and state involved...they sanction things that won't get them sued (or at least they try to do it that way). I've been watching MMA for quite some time, and still like to watch the classics. -
End of LineNever going to happen. Before MMA is even thought of being an Olympic sport, BJJ and Muay Thai would have to be included first.
-
said_aouitaAnother option- add sambo wrestling. Not exactly MMA but a heck of a lot more entertaining than greco currently in the Olympics. Uses same mats as freestyle and greco.

jmogGreco (and Freestyle to some degree) got boring recently in Olympics because of the rule changes enforced by FILA. Olympic wrestling is now about scoring 1 TD in a round and then stalling.

I really dislike the push out rule. -

Yeah. I was noticing that yesterday. Boring as hell to watch in some matches (like the one where the American Varner got the freestyle gold...lot of blatant stalling there after he got his takedown).jmog;1245703 wrote:Greco (and Freestyle to some degree) got boring recently in Olympics because of the rule changes enforced by FILA. As for MMA, can't see it working. Too many injuries for a quick-moving tournament to be viable. The winner wouldn't necessarily be the best (even the best for a two-week period); he'd be the guy who combined being good with being able to stay healthy. In UFC, if you win and break a hand or rib in the process or wind up with a huge gash above your eye, you take a few months off and come back when your medical suspension is over.
What would you do in the Olympics?
"I went 1-0, but didn't medal because the doctors said I couldn't fight again..." OR would the rules be changed for the Olympics to completely neuter any enjoyment for spectators with some system where you get points for takedowns, etc. and fights are immediately stopped and stood back up whenever a submission is applied to reduce chances of injury. -
reclegend22Why not stab fights? It combines the classic circling maneuvers of wrestling with the athletic jabbing of boxing, and, rather than the possible knee or brain injuries associated with other fight-oriented sports, the loser just dies.

Raw Dawgin' it
I see the only way this working is if they do a tournament months before hand and they show the medal fights during the actual olympics. So a year long tournament ends with the fight for gold and the fight for bronze. Otherwise, i see no way to have an MMA tournament in the olympics.Heretic;1245870 wrote:Yeah. On that note - let's add pistol duels.reclegend22;1245885 wrote:Why not stab fights? It combines the classic circling maneuvers of wrestling with the athletic jabbing of boxing, and, rather than the possible knee or brain injuries associated with other fight-oriented sports, the loser just dies. -

That'd be the single greatest event in the history of events. Usain Bolt wouldn't seem as tough to beat if Justin Gatlin could just draw a smith and wesson from his holster in the final 15 meters and shoot him.Raw Dawgin' it;1245889 wrote:On that note - let's add pistol duels. -

If Justin Gatlin could pull a gun and shoot a person while both he and the other person were at a dead sprint, he would replace Chuck Norris in every single joke as the baddest man ever.reclegend22;1245895 wrote:That'd be the single greatest event in the history of events.
