Dumbest Olympic events?

Any sport judged by a panel of people. Gymnastics, Figure Skating, etc. -

I imagine that there are many federations that take it seriously. I imagine the players do as well. Who doesn't want to win a gold medal and be in Olympic Village?like_that;1242499 wrote:It's not about participates, it's more about what the federations take more seriously. They put MUCH more stock into the World Cup/Euro/Concaf/etc than they do the olympics. This includes the Under-20 somethings big time events too. They already have their marquee events, they don't need the olympics.
Brazil and Mexico are taking it rather seriously. Spain, while failing miserably, must've taken it seriously or they wouldn't have fired their coach. To me, I believe the men's soccer has been put marked as a "lesser event" by fans and the media because there's already other events. It's not that the federations have taken it less seriously, people just say "oh, it's just a U23 squad with a couple of washed up vets." -

jmogHaving looked at what comprises the "modern pentathalon" I agree 100%, that event is stupid.

gutCaught a canoe race the other day. Dumbest event I've seen - you'll never see anyone actually paddling a canoe like this. Yet another event created to give second-rate athletes a chance to compete (like synchronized diving).
Comical thing was you'd expect this event to be dominated by an athlete from some fishing village, you know somewhere they might actually need and use a canoe. But, no, the competitor from Senegal got dusted and all the other guys looked like linebackers and probably never fished a day in their life. -

I'm not a huge fan of events decided only by judges. You can see crooked decisions even in the Olympics. Most famous I remember is Roy Jones losing in '88.Cher;1242513 wrote:Any sport judged by a panel of people. Gymnastics, Figure Skating, etc.
That said, I don't want judo and boxing removed from the Olympics. They are two of the best events. -
Ironman92Hate water polo.....but that Pony prancing stuff and those "guys" doing the synchronized diving and swimming...WTF
I like ping pong and badminton. I actually had badminton as one of the 12 sporty classes in college. It was easily the most fun of all of them. -
CharlesI do love archery. I thought the suggestion that the women's boxing team should wear skirts was remarkably primitive.
-
tk421they aren't getting rid of table tennis, that's China's sport. They wouldn't have nearly as many medals if that wasn't an olympic sport.

If I'm not mistaken Judo has a system of scoring points for throws and positions etc does it not? I know amateur judo competitions do.said_aouita;1242667 wrote:I'm not a huge fan of events decided only by judges. You can see crooked decisions even in the Olympics. Fab1bRanking all 32 sports from best to worst for TV viewing for Olympics:

Really Track Cycling #1? It's basically a one lap sprint after the guy in front blocks out the other for 2 laps.
Glad to see wrestling came in fairly good at 13. -
said_aouitaTrack cycling is huuuuuuge in the UK. Are they figured into the count too?

It doesn't seem like it is based on TV ratings, it's just their opinion on what is most enjoyable to watch on TV.said_aouita;1242826 wrote:Track cycling is huuuuuuge in the UK. Are they figured into the count too? -
mellaThe prancing horse thing... Not a sport, not fun to watch. I was going to say the trampoline but at least it is based on humans doing something, not how good does your horse prance.
FYI the trampoline was originally called the jumpoline until your mom got on one back in 1973. -

Martin Floreani and his websites rule.
Here is a funny video of the Flo guys at the Olympics, watching Leo win silver in the 1500m. Flocasts is located in Austin, Texas. Same as Leo Manzano.

Yeah, the boxing scoring system is bleh. I'm not a fan. Plus, U.S. men suck at it now.THE4RINGZ;1242480 wrote:I used to look forward to Olympic Boxing. Rarely would there be a knock out, just two fighters trying to land blows for points. It used to be pretty simple land one punch get one point.
Not so much any more, the new scoring system is ridiculous. I watched maybe a dozen fights last week, and not one of them had the guy who had the best fight winning.
So boxing is moving up my list of an Olympic sport never to watch again.
How can anyone say handball? That sport is sick. I have watched it pretty much everyday. It is something I would play in high school or something. How are we not good at this?
As to the topic, anything with a horse. -

slcoachI like to watch events that I can tell who won. With the gymnastics and diving, I can't tell shit other than the bounce on the dismount and splash when they hit the water. When I see some little Kenyan running away from people, I can tell he's winning gold. Show me 10 dives and I couldn't tell you a 6.5 from a 9.5.
