Which conference had the best and worst first weekend?
-
sportchamppsWith the last few games underway which conference has had the best opening weekend? Which conference had the worst opening weekend.
-
september63Big 10 isnt doing to shabby. 6-2 with Purdue playing right now. PAC 10 surprising success. Big East has to be considered a fail!! Even with WV and Syracuse.
-
CinciX12The Atlantic 10 took a hit. The conference went from hoping to get 5 bids, to only getting 3, and then having 2 of those 3 lose.
-
killer_ewokThe Big East typically does very well in the NCAA tourney. You're going to have a down year every now and again.
Anyways, as Len Elmore and Seth Davis said earlier.....the NCAA tournament isn't about conferences.....it's about matchups and teams. The Big East is still the best conference in my opinion and in many of the analysts' opinions. That doesn't mean that they haven't had a disappointing NCAA tournament....but it doesn't change that it was the best conference (again, my opinion and the opinion of many others).
I mean, really.....the WCC and PAC-10 were kicking ass.....anybody in their right mind think that those conferences are better than the Big East, Big 12, etc.?
Best weekend: West Coast
Worst weekend: Big East -
SonofanumpThe Ivy league had the best weekend.

It doesn't get much better than undefeated into the Sweet 16.Sonofanump wrote: The Ivy league had the best weekend. -
Cleveland BuckOut of the top 4 conferences coming in, the Big Ten and Big XII are the winners so far, and the Purdue/A&M game will determine whose weekend was better. It looks like Purdue just doesn't have enough without Hummel though. The Pac-10 only has two teams, but one of them is still going (Cal has no chance against Duke). They did better than expected. The Big East was overrated. If Xavier holds on only two of the eight Big East teams would be left. Even if they don't it is 3 of 8.
-
MulvaI would say no conferences have been especially impressive. It's been very balanced. Maybe the winner would be mid major and small conferences in general.
The Big East has clearly represented itself the most poorly. Based on seeding the Big East should have gone 7-1 in the 1st round. It went 4-4, and suffered, by seeding, the largest upset (14 seed Ohio) and 3 of the 5 biggest (losing to a pair of 11 seeds as well) overall. It also obviously had the biggest near miss with Nova needing overtime to beat a 15 seed.
Based on seeding it then should have had 5 teams in the Sweet 16. It's going to get 3 tops, and Pitt needs to come back from 7 down at half to get that number even. -
sportchamppsI think that if X beat Pitt then you can't say they our the best conference. Yes they had some good teams but, top to bottom were seeing they may have been overated. When your 3rd, 4th, and 5th best teams lose early (G-Town, Nova, Pitt) and the 6, 7,and 8 teams lose I think thats gotta be a bad weekend. Now if they can get 2 into the final four that would make up for this opening weekend.
As for the best conference it has to go to the Mid Majors in General. Also you gotta give props to the Pac 10 not looking as bad as everyone said.
I think basically this year was pretty even around the country and the only reasons you can consider a conference as the worst is if it came in with big expectations and failed.
This all changes if Pitt can advance. -
wghfanBad showing by the Mountain West. Zero teams left after round 2.
-
CinciX12Big East got 2. Pretty weak showing.
-
MulvaPurdue just won. I think it's now fair to say the Big 10 had one of the better showings. 7-2 with 3 sweet 16 teams.
-
september63Big Ten by FAR the best showing. 7-2 and 3 teams in the Sweet 16!
-
CinciX12For sure the Big 10 did well. I thought that Wisconsin and Purdue would have traded places though.
-
Cleveland BuckWith Hummel, Purdue would be a title contender. If they don't lose him and they win the Big Ten tournament (or at least make the final), they would have been a #1 seed.
-
killer_ewokThe Big 10 definitely a good showing in the first weekend of the tournament. I might even move them to the best weekend for a conference.
-
purple_reinTeams left:
Big Ten - 3
Big 12 - 2
Big East - 2
SEC - 2
ACC - 1
Atlantic 10 - 1
Horizon - 1
Ivy - 1
Missouri Valley - 1
Pac 10 - 1
West Coast - 1 -
killer_ewokI'll also put out there that for all of the shit the Big East has taken after the first two rounds.....I think the Big 12 is getting a bit of a free pass. They've only got 2 of their 7 teams left. The Big East is getting hammered but hardly anyone is ripping the Big 12.
-
sleeperI love how the analysts keep saying "Oh just because the BIG EAST is getting smacked in the tournament, doesn't mean they still aren't the best conference. The NCAA tournament is about matchups, not about conferences" LOL
Yeah right, you know damn well if the Big East had 5-6 teams in the sweet sixteen the analysts would be shoving the Big East is clearly the best basketball conference shit right down our throat. -
golf4life2008BIG 10 = GOAT in Football and BBALL!!!
-
Ankle BreakerAnalysts can sugarcoat it all they want. The Big East was indeed over8ted. So was the Big 12. I bought into all the hype and my bracket is a mess. Yes, I too, am a loser.
