Buckeyes a #1 seed for March Madness too

if they win the Big 10 tourney.

Coach Lavin said that on SC, tonight. I'd like to hear Lunardi's take on it. He's the expert, not Steve Lavin.

The issue is, the bracket would be pretty much finished BEFORE the finish of the Big Ten Tourny.
IT would take some upsets this week, along with some early upsets in conf. tourny for OSU to get a #1. Its not out of the realm of possibilities....but its very doubtful. I think they are a SOLID #2 as long as they get by the first game of the BTT.

I was talking about this with someone last night. It's still a possibility, and even more so after last night with Duke and Kansas State losing. I think after last night it becomes much more interesting.

Not if Duke wins out. The Blue Devils have a much more impressive resume. If Duke loses, then it's probably OSU's. But right now, no.

Duke's resume is much more impressive? Yes they have OOC wins against UConn and Gonzaga. But do they have any wins as impressive as @ Purdue or @ Michigan State? If the committee takes Turner's injury into account, I would say Duke and OSU are basically even.

Based on what? National perception? The ACC is not near the level of the Big Ten this season. Duke has 5 losses compared to 7 for the Buckeyes.

    Duke's 5:

    @ Wisconsin (Good Loss)
@ Georgia Tech (Not a bad loss)
    @ NC State (Bad Loss)
    @ Georgetown (Good Loss)
    @ Maryland (Good/not a bad Loss)

    OSU's 7:

    UNC (@ MSG) (Bad Loss)
@ Butler (Good Loss w/o Turner)
@ Wisconsin (Good Loss w/o Turner)
@ Michigan (Bad Loss w/o Turner)
    @ Minnesota (Bad Loss)
    @ West Virginia (Good Loss)
Purdue (Good Loss even being in Columbus)

    Duke has some good wins

    UConn (@ MSG)
    Gonzaga (@MSG)
    Wake (@ Cameron)
    @ Clemson
    GTech (@ Cameron)
    Maryland (@ Cameron)
    VTech (@ Cameron)

    As does OSU

    FSU (@ home)
    @ Purdue
    Wisconsin (@ home)
    @ Illinois
    @ Michigan State
    Illinois (@ home)

I will say that OSU has two wins that are more impressive than any that Duke has (@ MSU and @ Purdue). It is all about perception. Call me a homer, but I am more impressed with what OSU has done than Duke. I know the RPI says otherwise, but I don't think Duke deserves a #1 unless they win the ACC tourney. I don't set the field though.

No chance Duke's resume is more impressive.

Neutral court wins < Road wins

One could make the case for Duke, and also for OSU. I think they are pretty even and I think the conference tournament is very important now. Just a couple days ago I wouldn't have said that. Someone on ESPN last night said that Kansas State is the 4th #1 at this point, and I wouldn't have a problem with that as long as OSU is in their bracket as the #2.

Much more impressive? Spoken like a true Dukie.

And someone please tell me why a win over UConn, a team unlikely to make the NCAA, is so impressive?

At this point, with how the ENTIRE season has played out, Duke and OSU are very close. If OSU wins the big tourney tourney, they most definitely are most deserving of a #1 seed. But, Duke would be as well, if they win the ACC tourney. But, it is very close.
  • sportchampps
Could the number 1 seed come down to the results of the Big 10 ACC challenge with the big 10 getting the one due to this.
  • SportsAndLady
Yeah there's no way Duke's resume' is "way better". You could say they have a better resume' but you'll most likely just be showing your bias. OSU has a solid resume', and an even better resume' if the committee completely ignores the losses w/out Turner.

Results of ACC - Big 10 contest?

    You can't be serious!
  • Pick6
OSU may be end up being a number 1 seed, but even as a buckeye fan myself, i realize they are not an elite team. Very good , capable up possibly making the elite 8, but win a national championship no. One of three teams will win it. Syracuse, Kentucky, or Kansas.
  • ts1227
Gottleib (I think? I was only listening and not watching) just said that Ohio State definitely has a shot, but figured Duke will get it still (I am assuming this is if they both won out)
  • ytownfootball
If both win out I would say Duke gets it based on past performance/respect rather than OSU, I don't feel their resume' is any better at all. I readily admit to being a homer but I don't see Dukes resume' being that much better.

I'd listening to the Big Show right now, and they said that Lunardi and some other highly respected guy (they said these two were the best at predicting the field) both had OSU as a #3 seed. That's hard to believe.
  • ts1227
Gottleib is giving Duke the nod right now based off of the schedule (more top 100 RPI teams)

OSU is 5-4 against top 50 RPI, Duke is 8-4

That was based on his last prediction...which was out on Monday, and didn't take into account games of this week.

Gotcha. I would have thought after last night everything would have changed. There's still a lot of basketball left...
  • big_hits24
I would not care too much about being a #2 seed, although being a #1 would be a little easier...but I think both are not guarantee, but pretty good chances to get to the Sweet 16 and further? It is still weird to think that OSU could be a #1 seed with 7 losses. I know that a few losses came without ET but still weird to think about when you compare their records with other potential #1's.
  • Heretic
If Ohio State wins the B10 tournament AND the committee ignores the three losses without Turner in determining who gets seeded where, I think they have a very legit shot.

Personally, I think they'll end up a 2 (quite possibly in the West, where the weakest 1 tends to end up), but there is a chance they could move up to a 1. The higher they're seeded, the happier I'll be. After potentially playing three games in three days in the B10 tourney, it'd be great if they had a laugher in the first round, so Matta has the option to give his main guys some additional rest.
  • thedynasty1998
At least OSU is in the discussion, and who would have ever thought that at the beginning of this year. Bilas this morning said that he has OSU as his last #1. Gottlieb had Duke, referencing that Duke played more teams in the top 100 than OSU.

I wonder what kind of factor the Big 10 Championship being played so late on Sunday plays in the decision of the committee?
