Has any OSU player ever won the Naismith?

  • 77Legend
Just wondering since Even Turner is one of the front runners for the award this season? Anyone else ever win this award?

Jimmy Jackson won it in 1992.

I think. I could be wrong.

I believe he has won the player of the week honor more than any other Big10 player in history. Not a bad accolade to hold.

It wasn't called the Naismith, but Jerry Lucas won college Player of the Year twice for Ohio State in 1961 and 1962.

And he wasn't even the best player on the team.

    He didn't play for OSU.

Turner, with this season alone, will go down as one of the best OSU players, as far as a season goes. He is not only having one of the best seasons ever for an OSU player, but one of the best seasons for an NCAA player.
Unfortunately, his Overall career isn't anywhere near someone like Lucas, Jackson, Kellogg or Havlicek..to name a few.
If he happens to stay next year...then he could be mentioned with those above. Not yet IMO.
The great, great players...are measured over their career...not just a season or two.
THAT being said..IF, and its a BIG IF, Turner could carry this team through the NCAA.....that could change things quickly.

Havlicek was the better pro, but Lucas was by far the superior college player.

Scoonie Penn won it in 1999 - 00.

Before everyone gets excited, he won the Francis Pomeroy Naismith award. It's awarded to the best college player 6'0" or under.

Talking about Turner as one of the greats. If he makes a strong tournament run he will be remembered. For the most part Buckeye fans are more about winning than the stats. That's why someone like Scoonie Penn is usually mentioned as someone's top 10 Buckeye's of all time.
