Today the Ole Miss student body voted an overwhelming Yes to having a voice in the selection of the next Ole Miss mascot, the first since Colonel Reb was removed from the sidelines several years ago.
The student turnout for the voting paralleled that of a typical student body president election according to Sparky Reardon, the Rebel Dean of Students.
There has been a mounting effort in support of Admiral Ackbar, the only potential candidate who was an actual Supreme Commander of the REBEL Alliance Fleet. I think that title sells itself. However, I'm sure their will be some d-bags round Oxford way that will spoil all the fun for everyone.
The students now have the ear of the University and will be able to put a new identity in place for a new generation of rebellious young men and women. UM Chancellor Dan Jones released this comment on the mascot situation:
“Our students think of themselves as Ole Miss Rebels. They are today’s Ole Miss Rebels and they want a new on-field mascot that represents their spirit and energy. They will lead the effort to create a mascot that they think will improve school spirit and the game-day experiences for themselves and others.”
So, I'm thinking maybe it's time for a female representative? Perhaps something topical like a few combinations of loose and/or tight fitting clothes (depending on scenario), sans undergarments of course, and probably with a bad case of the sniffles.
Alas, the true fate of the next Rebel icon is in the hands of a "student committee" who will be charged to harness their inner creativity and identify the next face of the Ole Miss Rebels.
