The Good Ol' Boy, Roy Williams, Downplays Haiti Disaster
-
reclegend22Read for yourself. Honestly, it's not even comical. The comment he made about Carolina fans not having enough passion as a whole to compete with the passion of his tiny pinky toe was pretty damn funny. But that's just another example of Roy throwing people -- his people -- under his ol' Coke truck. It's Roy being his typical, naive self.
This, however, is just stupid.
Roy, in a recent CNNSI article:
"Our massage therapist told me, 'You know, coach, what happened in Haiti is a catastrophe. What you're having is a disappointment,' " said Williams. "I told her that depends on what chair you're sitting in. It does feel like a catastrophe to me, because it is my life."
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/stewart_mandel/02/09/duke.north.carolina/index.html
In light of Roy's recent "I'm taking my white tennies off at half time no matter cancer awareness or not in order to break my team's bad luck streak" moment in the Maryland game last Sunday -- in which Carolina's head man took off his white tennis shoes on coaches versus cancer awareness day to stem the bleeding of his 13-10 club -- this is a very, very low moment for Roy.
And people think Michael K is a bad guy. Worse then Roy? Laughable. -
reclegend22Had Krzyzewski said this, he be burned at the media stake.
-
trackandccrunnerHonestly I don't really see whats wrong here... He didn't say that what happened in Haiti wasn't a catastrophe and I would hope if I was a UNC fan that he would think what was going on at UNC right now would be a catastrophe.
-
reclegend22You don't compare the two -- millions dying as a result of a hurricane blast and 10 players losing a few hoops contests -- in the same light. That's just a simple lack of class. As a high profile public figure, you have to be more eloquent than that.
I too would want Coach K to think a 13-10 season is a catastrophe, but you don't equate it to one in the same dialogue as Haiti. There is a time and place to say something like that. Roy often lacks this ability to distinguish, however.
This has more to do with the double standard that we see in regards to K and Roy, that being that, for some reason, the college basketball public sees Roy as a "good ol' class act" and K as an evil furor. I honestly am sick of hearing about Haiti -- we have enough problems as it is here in this country, people here who need food and water and our help -- but this is not classy, IMO.
Coach K would never even think of making this connection. -

There are a lot of people not too happy about Roy's recent media act.. -

burt07I'm someone that thinks soundbytes are blown way out of proportion a majority of the time but this is purely idefenisible in my mind. Just ridiculously stupid.
-
CinciX12There wasn't a single thing wrong with that.
You think UNC fans don't care more about this awful season than they do Haiti? I care more about Xavier's awful season than I do Haiti. -
Azubuike24To be honest, as a UNC I'd hope that was Roy's focus. The Haiti tragedy is horrible, but in-terms of relevance to Roy Williams and those affiliated to North Carolina, their struggles are more important.
-
THE4RINGZThe thread was started by a duke fan. Any opportunity to make UNC look foolish.
At least Williams is focused on his job. -

Exactly. Insensitive or not, it doesn't concern him. UNC basketball concerns him.Azubuike24 wrote: To be honest, as a UNC I'd hope that was Roy's focus. SQ_CraziesI'm on Roy's side.
I for one think that we're sending far too much money there. Not to mention, I have enough of my own problems (as do many American's) to worry about some Haitians. Call me insensitive. I don't really care. -
se-alumI despise Roy Williams, but this wasn't bad at all. He wasn't comparing anything to Haiti, he was simply stating that UNC's season is a catastrophe to him.

mallymal614Are we allowed to say anything anymore in America without offending somebody? This was far from bad.

reclegend22The larger point that should be taken from all of this is Roy's increasingly rampant narcissism. Sometimes this guy really seems to think he's all that matters. Taking off his white tennis shoes during the cancer awareness game because he'd had enough of that cancer crap and wanted to stem the dad-gum Maryland run, having a fan thrown out of the Dean Dome for wanting Deon Thompson to miss a free-throw and then stating, in so many words, that his 10 losses are just as big a catastrophe as the Haiti hurricane killing event (and then repeating that same thing in a press conference the day after he originally said it, in what appears to have been a sad attempt for sympathy), are just events that have occurred within the last couple of months. Two in the last week.
To me, the most baffling is the cancer tennis shoe thing. Really, Roy? You couldn't leave your shoes on for the whole game, in support of raising awareness and finding a cure for one of the most deadly diseases known to man? Kinda lame -- and beyond not showing class. Nearly every coach in the damn country wore white tennies and kept them on the whole game. Roy, however, took them off because, in his words, he thought it might be a good luck charm to get a win.
I'm honestly getting sick of hearing about Haiti, too. This is more about Roy and his incredibly ridiculous behavior. I find it incredulous that the same people who take unwavering shots at the character of Mike Krzyzewski can praise this guy.
Go Duke! -
wildcats20You're getting sick of hearing about Haiti but yet you start this thread that has to do with Haiti....come on rec
-
reclegend22If anything else, this is Roy just being incredibly stupid. I can't name another coach that would make that comment twice, in the same discussion with Haiti. It's unreal.
And as I said, I grew tired of the Haiti relief talk weeks ago. This site proves my point, though. Had this been K and someone here brought it up, we'd have the "classy" and "just another example of K's character" sarcastic posts filling the thread.
That's fine, though. My coach is going to beat Roy's ass tonight -
reclegend22My hate really is showing through here.
If it wasn't for that damn Coach K thread on the front page, this probably wouldn't even be here.
At least I can admit it. Lol. I get too into this stuff. My hate makes me sick -
SQ_CraziesI would have said the same thing no matter who said this. You're just a paranoid doucher.

I've seen some really bad threads in my life at JJ and here. But the one about K only coaching 1 NBA champion might take the cake.reclegend22 wrote: My hate really is showing through here.

ironman02Geez, rec. Calm down. It's not even 8PM yet.

RiverRat13Roy Williams obviously causes cancer.

september63I dont like Roy much. Dont care for UNC really either. This comment is being blown out of proportion. He never said Haiti wasnt awefull. He just was acknowledging he is aware the UNC fans are expecting more than they are getting.

Actually, I think he may be cancer. I'm taking these tennies off, I'm not going anywhere for a long, long time anyhow.RiverRat13 wrote:Roy Williams obviously causes cancer.
