Comparing the SEC and Big 10 in Recruiting

  It's not like they've been terrible. Lots of teams have 9 losses over the past two years. Northwestern, Rutgers, Navy, Houston, etc.

  Very true. In the recruiting rankings, a lot of emphasis is put on quantity, rather than just quality. Only signing 18 players definitely dropped OSU in the rankings.
  
  I'm a little disappointed that they didn't get another O-lineman or two, but for the most part, they filled the team's needs. Decent class that could really turn out to be pretty good. Need a GREAT class next year, in my opinion.

  I'm sure outside of the Lady Vol fans, most in Tennessee don't even know what that means. Why do SEC fans get such a hard on when teams from their conference win the MNCG? Does it make for an excuse for losing on the 3rd Saturday in October?

  Technically there are no "National Champions". NCAA doesn't recognize winner of BCS National Championship game as a true "National Champion", only the winner of the FCS Playoff.

  At seasons end, most teams deal with injuries. Its part of the game.

  OK, as long as you acknowledge that if the 2008 BCS Title Game wasn't held in New Orleans (a virtual home game for LSU), that LSU wouldn't have beaten OSU. Highly doubt it.

  Finally an SEC fan admits that Ohio State only got blown out against Florida because our top weapon hurt himself on the opening play. Florida couldn't touch Ted Ginn, every time he touched the ball he scored a TD.
  
  Just imagine if Ginn was healthy, Ohio State would have won by 100.

  So the SEC and their 30 recruits are better then OSU 18 recruits? That's about the same odds as the Civil War and we all know how that worked out for the South right?

  I'm glad we all agreed on the conditions though. If the LSU-Penn State game doesn't count, then I'm sure as fuck not going to count some garbage game Ohio State played without Ted Ginn. It took the Buckeyes all of 15 seconds to score when Ginn was on the field. Man, I feel better about that title game now.

  Since there were two references made not to a conference but to a region, I'll point out the geographic location of every BCS title game team. Bolded are in the former CSA states.
  
  1998 - Tennessee, Florida State
  1999 - Florida State, Virginia Tech
  2000 - Oklahoma, Florida State
  2001 - Miami, Nebraska
  2002 - Miami, Ohio State
  2003 - LSU, Oklahoma
  2004 - USC, Oklahoma
  2005 - USC, Texas
  2006 - Florida, Ohio State
  2007 - LSU, Ohio State
  2008 - Florida, Oklahoma
  2009 - Bammer, Texas
  
  10 of 12 national champions come from that region, and 18 of 24 participants do.

  Still waiting for anyone in the SEC outside of Tennessee to pony up and start playing some out of conference games... especially away from home. Come to think of it, maybe Tennessee should quit too... hasn't worked out so well for them.

  It does help when, like Alabama, you've basically signed an extra recruiting class over a period of 3 years, and simply weeded out the players who didn't cut it.
  
  Since no other conferences are doing this (and it's now being cut back by the NCAA), I'd say it likely plays a big role in rankings -- especially when recruiting rankings are tilted heavily in favor of classes that have more kids in them.

  Have an example of the oversigning by Alabama. From 2007 to 2010, Saban signed 113 recruits (remember, there is an 85 scholarship limit). That's just recruits, and doesn't take into account how many players were on the Alabama team at any given point when those players were signed.
  
  Even if you assume he started at zero (he obviously didn't) in 2007, that still means Saban essentially signed an extra recruiting class of 28 kids over that four year period -- and then culled out those kids who weren't as good before granting actual scholarships, and keeping his total at 85 as NCAA regs require.
  
  Is it any wonder SEC teams have had a distinct advantage on the playing field over the last 5 years or so? When you consistently sign extra recruits and then run off current scholarship players who aren't as good, you basically eliminate the margin of error that every other conference has to factor in when signing their classes to stay within 85 scholarships.
