Notable Games & Discussion 2/03/2010

Maine at Vermont - Big game in the America East race. Vermont is the clear favorite but they have slipped to 3rd place. Maine is tied for first with Stony Brook. Both teams still have to travel to Stony Brook later in the year, so losing this one would be devastating.

    (22) Pittsburgh at (6) West Virginia - Both teams are near the top of the Big East standings, but it will be tough for either to overtake both Nova and Syracuse. However, this is a chance for a marquee win and at this point, West Virginia is still in the running for a #1 seed. Big game for the Panthers as well who have struggled since starting off so hot.

Marshall at Tulsa - Neither are going to likely win the C-USA regular season, but this is a multiple bid league and these key games against the other possible at-large teams are huge. Marshall has dropped 4 straight games while Tulsa has still won 9 of 10. Bigger game for the Herd, but the more likely at-large team is Tulsa.

Mississippi State at (18) Vanderbilt - Huge game between SEC contenders, but a bigger game for MSU. After a loss to Arkansas last week, the Bulldogs need this one badly and can take control of the SEC West with a win as Ole Miss has dropped 2 in a row. Vanderbilt is in the midst of a tough stretch, and this would be huge to move to 6-1 in league play and win one of the tougher remaining games they have.

UAB at Memphis - Another big C-USA battle between one of the co-favorites (UAB) and a team who has owned this league for years but is in a dogfight this year. It's bigger for Memphis to hold their home court and to tie UAB in the loss column. With that said, like the Marshall/Tulsa game, it's big for possible future at-large seeding as well.

Wichita State at (24) Northern Iowa - The Panthers have 1 loss in MVC play, but if they win this game, they basically get a solid 2-game lead over Wichita and only have really the bracket buster game against Old Dominion remaining. If Wichita wins, they would not only tie for first in the MVC, but pick up yet another quality win and sweep UNI. They have their own bracket buster game at Utah State.

Texas A&M at Missouri - The bubble teams in the Big 12 square off and right now with Oklahoma State losing, the 5-7 spots in the Big 12 are really up in the air (OSU, A&M and Mizzou). All 3 could make the tournament, but my guess is one of the 3 is left out. This makes a game between them HUGE.

UAB - Memphis and Wichita - UNI both very close games so far.

Where the hell did this South Florida team come from? 4th straight win in Big East play, winning 72-64 @ Georgetown.

This comes after beating Providence, Seton Hall, and Pitt in the previous 3 games.

    The Noopy Crater effect?

    Dominique Jones is ridiculous.

USF is now 15-7 overall and 5-5 in Big East play. They're 8th in the conference standings. This team has a real shot at an at-large if they finish the regular season strong and get a win or two in the Big East tourney.
