Rivals Writers are Clowns

This is the article I would rather see. I agree with this article completly. It wasn't condisending to the players and their efforts this season. It is from Duane Long's blog.
I cannot believe that the same brain trust that came up with last weeks gameplans came up with this mess. On offense I could not understand why players bothered with the wristbands. There weren't enough plays in the game plan to need to check their wristbands. Pryor ran 8 times. Our best weapon ran the ball 8 times. How many of those were called runs? He is primed to throw the ball, 14 of 17. This gameplan just stunk up the joint. I only noticed Tressel consult Hazel one time. Maybe he was talking to him more. I only saw them communicate one time. Every single time there was an opportunity to be bold, to go out and get it, we chose to play it safe. Even on defense we looked like the pre-USC 2008 defense. Sit back, keep it in front of us. No blitzing. This was play not to lose at its ugliest.

Several players really had bad games. Chekwa has not been beaten that much the rest of the year put together. I want a word worse than awful but I don't want to sit and think about it any longer than I have to. McNutt ate him alive. You can bet the pro people are going to break down this tape in detail. Anderson Russell had two interceptions. In between he was his usual indecisive self. He said it himself after the Texas game. Last line of defense and he gets caught between playing the ball and playing the man. The first interception was another indecisive play that happened to fall right in his lap. He was late but so was the pass. If he broke on the receiver when he should of, he is hitting him and not in place to make the interception. On the first Iowa scoring possession early in the drive he was late and gave up a big play. It should have been a touchdown instead of a field goal drive. Russell is late again but Stross dropped a touchdown pass that hit him square in the chest. The big play that set up the missed field goal to start the second half was Russells fault. Maybe they said something to him at the half. He is covering the wide side of the field but follows a receiver all the way to the other hashmark, leaving Torrence no cover. I HATE being at this point with Russell. He was always such a class act back in the days when I called players. A really nice kid. Now the only time he seems to catch my attention is when he is doing something wrong. Andy Miller must be hurt. I did not see him in there at all. There is no way that Jim Cordle is a better left tackle. He had one good block, on the Saine 49 yard touchdown run. He said as much in the paper this morning. He got whipped play after play by an awfully good player in Adrian Clayborn. Maybe that is why we did not try and throw more. We could not block #94. This is not about Cordle. Coaching staff decisions with personnel have everything to do with why he ended up getting beaten so badly yesterday. He was a kid that came here as an inside player moved out to right tackle then to left tackle. That is completely backward from how it is done. He is so out of position he can't be expected to do much better. Not against a kid of that caliber.

I think the team was flat in general but the game plan was so much about not losing that it nearly prevented us from winning. Really, if JT is going to step in and call game like this and he is going to do it this way, there is no reason for a new OC.A change in offensive line coach and offensive coordinator will suffice for now but Jim Tressel himself is going to become the target for Buckeye Nation in the future when we see this kind of pathetic performance. We will not win the Rose Bowl this way. We had a had enough time beating a really good Iowa team with this garbage let alone a top team. The old saying goes "Fortune favors the Bold". Someone needs to carry that banner into the stadium in the future.

I am done with this. I went on longer than I intended to. I want to enjoy the Rose Bowl berth and get ready for Michigan week. I don't want to waste another moment thinking about what this coaching staff nearly did to this classy bunch of seniors. Pathetic.

Read the article twice, and I still don't see anything I disagree with

I don't think the rivals article was condescending to the players. Rather it was an indictment of the dinosaurs in our coaching staff and their stubbornness to adapt to the modern game of college football.

Why air it out all the time like most people love seeing when you are getting 4+ ypc and 200+ a game?
The same conservative play calling built the 14 point lead so people need to quit bitching and complaining. Our offensive running game ran straight down the field against Iowa for two TD's. They built a 14 point lead with this so called crappy offense. If it wasn't for a blown tackle on the kick coverage and the offsides by Williams the game would have been a blow out.

Just because it isn't flashy or there are drives where it stalls quickly doesn't mean its a crappy offense.
Dude, it's an anemic offense at best. We're not even in the top half of D.1 teams in yards per game.

It's great to get 4+ ypc in the first, second, and third quarter. the problem is, when other coaches play Jim Tressel, and he has a 14 point lead in the 4th quarter like he did on saturday, the KNOW he's not going to pass it. They know what's coming. If I was the other coach, I would put all 11 of my guys in the box, plus the kitchen sink if I was in Iowa's 4th quarter situation on saturday. Tressel is scared to death to throw downfield when he doesn't HAVE to. When he can try and milk a lead, he's going to run, run, run, and MAYBE a 3-5 yard pass or a screen. Do you think we'd ever throw it 12-15 yards down field on 2nd and 5 with a 14 point lead? Hell no. It's great to get 4+ ypc when the defense doesn't know what's coming. When everyone in the stadium knows what's coming, you're not going to pick up many first downs going run, run, screen or run, run, run. That's why a lot of his games are so close, and that's why you see our running game work a lot at the beginning of games, and become less and less effective as the game goes on. because in critical moments, or in times where we COULD try to score again, Tressel takes bleeding the clock over trying to score EVERY TIME. The last time I checked, games weren't won by time of possession. They're won by the team that has the most points at the end.

Tress is the only coach I know that tries to run clock in the 3rd quarter of games.

I can't believe that anyone could disagree with this article.

And to prove that the Big 10 is down? Seriously? Have you watched any college football this year?
  • pharmerbuckeye23
I had hoped the PSU game was the beginning of changes to come...now I see that it wasn't the definition of change, merely a fluke. A glimpse of the potential that this team has. We need an OC. Someone who can realize and utilize that potential to its fullest. I respect what Tressel has accomplished, and I understand he is a top notch coach, but top notch coaches don't do everything alone. He needs to realize his area of weakness and bring in someone that can iron out the offensive mistakes. Next year we should be competing for a national title, but if the offense doesn't improve, I don't see it happening.

Great article by Long. Agree 100%. Pathetic coaching. However, some will say the same old "WE WON THE BIG 10!!!! WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?!?!?!,etc.

I just read this POS article on Yahoo. Just because media darlings USC and Oklahoma are out of the BCS race (which why aren't you trashing them) they find another way to rag on OSU!
  • thedynasty1998
The ragging on OSU is deserved. When you fail to show up big game after big game, yet are talked about as an elite program that's what happens.

OSU is relevant. Just like Notre Dame will always be relevant. People write articles and talk about OSU because people will read the articles. So, I don't get upset when I read an article criticizing Tressel, and I actually enjoy reading something that puts into words what I feel as well.

2002-03', Ohio State shocks the country and upsets Miami in the National Championship! All Hail Tressell said the Buckeye Nation! OSU is back on the national scene! 2003-04', OSU returns to the Fiesta Bowl and beats Kansas St and ends up 4th in the nation! All Hail Tressell says the Buckeye Nation! 2004-05', beat Oklahoma State in the Alamo Bowl, all Hail Tressel says the Buckeye Nation! 2005-06' Big Ten Champs, beat Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, wait a minute, Tressell you are getting conservative here! LOL 2006-07', Big Ten champs, OSU number 1 in the polls and gets routed by Florida in the National Championship! They were outmatched no doubt. Hey, wait Tressell, come on dont let us down!

Now, for the defining season that most argue of the downfall and the uprising against Tressel and Tressel ball. 2007-08', Big Ten Champs. However, the rest of the countries best stunk it up down the stretch! Florida, Oklahoma, USC they all choked down the stretch losing games that kept them out of the National Championship! Now, here comes the Buckeyes, playing OK and winning down the strecth! They back into a National Championship that they had no business playing in the first place! Now, why doesnt, Florida, USC, or Oklahoma take a beating by the writers about choking, nah just like the Buckeye Nation, just blame Tressel!

From 2002-06, OSU won all of its bowl games and a National Championship! Does the conservative play calling irritate me, sometimes, but narrow mindedness does even more! LOL
  • thedynasty1998
Ask Phil Fulmer why he got fired at Tennessee. Sometimes a coach sets expectations too high for himself. I'm not saying that Tressel should be fired, but when you establish yourself at a high level (and let's not pretend that OSU wasn't there before Tressel), the fans expect that every year. When it doesn't happen, you get criticized.

And I don't know how anyone in their right mind could not think OSU needs an offensive coordinator with some creativity.
  • lacknett
They probably don't dog Florida and USC because Florida has "won" 2 of the last 3 titles and USC is basically undefeated against the Big 10's best teams this decade. Oklahoma is another story. They deserve just as much critisim as OSU.

Outside Notre Dame, Ohio State and Oklahoma are probably the most overranked and hyped teams in current college football.
  • OneBuckeye
Notre Dame... Oklahoma and USC for their recent two losses never get bashed like this.
  • thedynasty1998
    Notre Dame does.

    Oklahoma for whatever reasons doesn't.

USC has been very good and won their big games until this year.
