    That is interesting

There is probably a reason that Clay Mathews went from a 2 star walk on to a first round draft pick

  • rocket31
    haha, indeed.

i think it should be noted that there are more 2 or 3 star players than there are 5 star players in each class...however, it is interesting to see that there were more 2 star players drafted than 4 stars in last years draft.

FAIL. If you are going to make fun or bash someone, you should probably get the names right.

That's Brian Cushing and not Clay Matthews.

    That would be a megaburn.

    Stroups with an Epic Fail

So the lesson, according to that data, is: most of your stars are rated 4 and 5 stars when coming out of high school.

Recruiting is definitely an inexact science, but in this case at least the majority of top rated players were the majority getting selected as first rounders.

But the real question is how many 5 stars, 4 stars, 3 stars, 2 stars, and 1 stars were there total in the class? Correct me if I'm wrong, but there will be waaaaay more 2 stars than 5 stars.

What % of a certain star rating make it to the first round, that would be an interesting statistic... it'd show more clearly how accurate the system is. The ratings are based off potential and if % wise the numbers fit in order, than I'd say recruiting is doing pretty well.

Thats one reason I hate when people talk about how amazing it is that a 3 star turned out better than a 5 star and act like its the norm. Fact is there are a lot more 3 star guys than 5 star so there is bound to be a few that turn out to be really good. I am not saying that star ratings are everything, but it there is a reason the top teams are where they are year after year. It's because they bring in the best players. They get the higher rated players and they are the most successful teams.

    Great post Rocket.

Everyone gets so caught up in the rating system, half the time those ratings are awful. Most of the people who judge a player by his star rating has never even watched the kids play.

The new Top 250 also came out, so Meyer offering him may not have had anything to do with it.

There's also a fair number of players who switch positions upon entering college. Although it's not the most recent set of examples, I remember Tennessee switching Jason Witten from defensive end to tight end, John Henderson from guard to defensive tackle, Fred Weary from defensive tackle to guard, and Donte Stallworth from tight end to receiver. Any one of those guys would have been *, **, or maybe *** at their "normal" position, and all became high draft picks from a position they'd have been ranked much higher at coming out of high school.

Who is the player? I thought you may be talking about Tyler Murphy, but he's still listed as a 2 star on Rivals.

I never put much stock/thought into the star ratings, other than a basic rating of skill. There are too many variables to consider with the transition to the college level/living away from home etc...can't possibly get a good gauge on those and project success.
