Notable Games & Discussion 1/30/2010

Azubuike24Aside from the Kansas/Kansas State, Duke/Georgetown, Kentucky/Vanderbilt and Baylor/Texas games, there are some other games with major impact around the country. Here's what I got:
Louisville at (9) West Virginia - Big game for WVU in terms of seeding, but a monster game for Louisville who is looking to avoid another NIT over Pitino. Games against WVU and UConn in a span of 3 days are huge for the Cards.
Oklahoma State at Missouri - Pretty much a battle for the 5th and 6th spots in the Big 12, and both of these teams would likely be NCAA bound as of now. Bigger game for Missouri because it's at home, but OSU also has some tough tests ahead. A resume builder for either team.
Texas Tech at Texas A&M - Right behind Mizzou and OSU in the standings, either of these teams could jump into that final Big 12 spot (as I believe they get 6 NCAA bids). Bigger game for TTU who desperately needs to get back on track with a win as they are fading fast.
Northern Iowa at Missouri State - Missouri State needs this win badly, or they are pretty much sunk in the MVC. Another test for UNI who can get that much closer to sealing the conference title with a win. They have Wichita at home next week, and after that, it's on cruise control. History says the regular season MVC champ is almost a lock to make the NCAA's.
Washington State at Washington - The Apple Cup of basketball for the first of 2 on the year, both teams are absolutely desperate to get a win. Washington has been one of the biggest disappointments of the year nationwide, but are tough at home. The Cougars are drowning and need some sort of floating device at this point.
Old Dominion at Northeastern - Northeastern fell to Drexel Wednesday otherwise this would be a battle of 9-1 CAA teams. George Mason also sits at 9-1 with ODU, and Northeastern already has a win over GMU. A win here puts them in great position to get back on top of a great league.
Harvard at Cornell - Interestingly enough, both teams played Friday night, Harvard ripping Columbia and Cornell blasting Dartmouth. With no conference tourney, and nobody else in the Ivy League with much chance to beat either of these teams, the two Harvard/Cornell games are going to be massive.
UTEP at UAB - The last remaining unbeaten in C-USA, UAB has already beaten Marshall and Tulsa. A win over the Miners at home would be huge as they would basically just have to split with Memphis and take care of home games to run away with the title. UTEP still has a tough league schedule remaining, so any shot at a league title would mean a likely win in Birmingham.
Providence at Cincinnati - Two Big East teams on life support as both come in at 4-4 in the league. One of those games where the loser not only falls down another notch and below .500, they basically fall 2 games behind the other due to the loss. Providence just beat Connecticut while Cincinnati hasn't played since losing at Freedom Hall last Sunday. -
Azubuike24West Virginia opens up 13-0 against the Cards, fall down double digits in the 2nd half and comeback to win by 3, 77-74. Another 2nd half choke job by Louisville who is really disappointing. Not an NCAA team right now.
Missouri got up 15 on Oklahoma State but the Cowboys have hung close. Mizzou up 9 right now.
Missouri State with an early 5-point lead on Northern Iowa. -
september63DePaul, winners of 1 conference game in 2 years, beating #4 Syracuse in the 2nd half. Potential big time upset.
-
Azubuike24Some other notable finals.
1-20 UMBC beats 1st place Maine AT Maine by 11. Hmm.
Lafayette, the Patriot League leader loses to 6-15 American University at home by 10. -
Azubuike24Missouri cruises in beating OSU 95-80.
-
killer_ewokSyracuse rallied from 18 down to beat DePaul 59-57. Syracuse didn't come out ready to play on the road against a DePaul team that was unconscious early in the game. Avoided a bad loss there.
-
MulvaWashington is rolling in the 2nd half. Down 4 at halftime, they've outscored Washington State 22-5 to start the 2nd and open a double digit lead.
Texas is down 9 at home to Baylor in the 2nd half. Still not sold on the Longhorns. -
Azubuike24Northern Iowa hangs on to beat Missouri State. They pretty much have the MVC on lockdown from here on out IMO. They get Wichita at home and I just don't see them losing that one. After that, their only game against a conference opponent over .500 is against Creighton at home without their best player.

WVU plays 8 solid minutes a game. Luckily that has been enough to win most of our games so far. The other 32 are just pure garbage.
I'm sure you, as a Kentucky fan, appreciated the Karen Sypher chants the whole game. I wish they would have busted out an abortion chant but the did a good job. -
Skyhook79West Virginia benefited from 2 terrible calls by the refs in the last 20 secs.

No they didn't. The out of bounds call was the correct call.
The hand touching the ball does not have tape on it which means it isn't Ebanks' hand. Correct call and WVU ball.
Don't forget about the call right before that where Mazzulla drove in the lane and was tripped and pushed down but no foul call. And the blatant and obvious goaltend the refs did not call. -
Skyhook79Mazzulla wasn't tripped he stepped on the defenders foot and the ball went off his (Mazzulla) head.
The goaltend wasn't obvious and on replay it looked like it was still going up. -

There was a hand on Mazzulla's back.Skyhook79 wrote: Mazzulla wasn't tripped he stepped on the defenders foot and the ball went off his (Mazzulla) head.

I'll give you the goal tend as it was close.
It was an awful crew of refs though. I don't really remember from any other game, but they were as bad as I've seen in awhile. For both teams. -
MulvaBaylor beats Texas in OT.
-
Azubuike24Northeastern beats Old Dominion while George Mason wins a close on at home. GMU now 10-1 and in first place, while ODU and Northeastern are at 9-2.
-
Gypsy Rose LeeWVU held Louisville to 9 points in the last 10 minutes of the game. WVU is capable of playing some great basketbsll when needed.
-
SpeedofsandDowney vs Uga is 78-77 , 34 sec. to go
-
SpeedofsandUga has 1 and 1 , 3.5 seconds, missed back rim, So. Carolina reb., 1.8 to go. SoCar has to inbound. same score 78-77
-
Speedofsandfinal, Downey 33 pts

MulvaCornell beat Harvard 86-50. I think it's safe to say there is no doubt who the best team in the Ivy League is.

There were some questionable calls in the second half, though. This one could have finished differently.Mulva wrote:Cornell beat Harvard 86-50. I think it's safe to say there is no doubt who the best team in the Ivy League is. -
Azubuike24Cornell really pounded Harvard, wow.
Memphis losing to SMU while UTEP wins at UAB in OT to take over 1st place in C-USA. Marshall continues their slide dropping a game to Houston.
Sam Houston State wins at Texas A&M CC as the battle of the unbeatens in the Southland squared off. Sam Houston is a dangerous team IMO, they gave UK all they could handle earlier in the year, the team can really score.
Texas A&M whipped up on Texas Tech. 28 from Donald Sloan.
New Mexico State wins at Louisiana Tech only a half game back in the win column of the Bulldogs as they beat them 91-77. Utah State is also sitting with 2 league losses.
Gonzaga loses to San Francisco as they finally get beat after flirting with a couple close WCC games recently.
