If John Cooper coached OSU today, how long would he last?

  • burt07
2 years? 1? Listening to the radio shows on the way home from the game was just beyond belief to me. So many people bitching about Tressel and calling for Brian Kelly to come in. I mean, I'm all for pointing out things from time to time with coaches, no one is ever above criticism, but it just amazes me the way OSU fans react to things. We just won the Big Ten and are heading to the Rose Bowl!

well he could not beat Michigan but then again Michigan was good and right now they stink so I am sure he would win most of the games between the two. So I say he would be doing fine.

Why would OSU even need a new coach. They are wining games. 5 big ten tittles in a row and you want to fire the man? Yet when I get pissed at UM going 3-9 and then 5-7 people say I am goofy. Let osu go 3-9 and then 5-7 and see how your fans would react.

also it is not a bad thing that people don't like JT. It keeps him on his game. Unlike RR who just says wait until next year or we need more time.

The conference is completely different now. Its sad, really.

    Its 1. Ohio State

    2. Penn State

    everybody else.

Tress and Cooper's situations are completely different. Michigan was arguably the better program during 90s (maybe not arguably, they were haha) and Penn State was just as solid, and besides that you had somebody else stepping up every year. (Northwestern, Purdue under Brees, Illinois, Iowa). Now its an oddity for any of those teams to be solid.

What Tress has done is impressive, but I really don't think it is a stretch to think that Cooper would be doing the same thing. I just wish Tress would bring somebody in to call plays...

I agree Michigan was coopers big downfall and the stink right now so I think he would put up numbers similar to JT's. Not quite as good but similar.

People are idiots. Plain and simple.

I hate the fans that overreact. Tressel does not need to be fired. . . he just needs help calling plays.

Please. Michigan is nowhere near where it used to be, or should be. Iowa has just come out of their cocoon right on schedule. They are good for one solid year every 2-3 yrs. The rest of the time they hover around 6-7 wins.

The Big 10 is weak. I hate to admit it, and I haven't until this year. You can't ignore the W-L record in bowl games/out of conference matchups

    This. +1

Next season Tressel will be trying to lead the Bucks to a SIXTH straight Big10 championship!! And people want him gone. Wow. If they win the conference again next year, it'll tie the Big10 record for consecutive conference titles in the conference...set by Woody Hayes. You can't make an argument that's logical saying the Bucks arent producing. They are. I would just like to see an offense that features more opportunities for points and big plays. Tressel will loosen up more and more as Pryor matures, but it still won't be as wide open as it could be. However, they're always going to be in the hunt for a Big10 title with him there. Which is more than I could say for Cooper's 1 Rose Bowl and 0 NC's in 13 years.

I agree Red_Skin_Pride. I would like to think the offense could look like it did in 2006 with Troy Smith. That offense was wide open! Against Michigan, with a 3rd and short. . . play action to Beanie up the middle, Troy Smith to Ginn over the top for a 50 yrd touchdown. . . I can't even imagine Tressel calling that play now.

I agree with why get rid of a coach that has won 5 straight Big Ten titles? Maybe he does need someone else to call the plays, but that's no reason to want him fired. As for those who want him fired maybe you need to contact Weis as he'll probably be available.

I don't understand why people keep hanging their hats on Big 10 titles. It means little. The Big 10 is plain awful. I'll honestly be surprised if they win one bowl game this year.

If Tressel gets blown out by the Pac 10 in the Rose Bowl people will go crazy.

And to think people were not too upset with the USC game because everyone was still on their bandwagon. After that game I said that USC was average this year.

first, Burt....please don't mention Coop and coaching the Buckeyes in the same sentence again........I lived that once and don't EVER want to have to live that again...........;)

secondly, ANYONE who says Coach Tressel needs fired should automatically be banished to the state up North or southbend............because they are clueless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go BUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I disagree. Michigan had OSU's number, but majority of the time OSU came in the higher ranked team. OSU's program was better, arguably, Cooper just couldn't beat Michigan.

Now as for the firing of Tressel, I don't think he should be fired, but I don't think he is this great coach that some think. True, he has led us to our 5th straight Big Ten title, but let's face it, the Big Ten is very soft and our 1-6 bowl record last year proves that. Our OOC record as a conference proves that. The Big Ten hasn't had a team beat a big time program from another conference in 2 seasons.

The point I am trying to make is that Tressel should win the Big Ten every year, the conference is soft and he has the most talented teams, but when it comes to the national stage, he is mediocore at best. Mack Brown beats him. Pete Carrol beats him. Urban Meyer beats him down as does Les Miles. When the talent level is equal, Jim Tressel is the difference maker.

I truly believe that the Buckeyes win, especially this season, despite JT. His playcalling is so terrible that it actually allows other teams to get back into the game (Iowa last night is the perfect example).

Now JT has done great things at OSU and I appreciate the fact that he got the Bucks their 1st national title since 1968, but the way the college game changes so fast this day in age, I think the game has passed him up. His unwillingness to turn over the playcalling to a competent OC is what will lose us the Rose Bowl.

I, along with many others last night, have never been so unexcited about clinching the Rose Bowl and winning the Big Ten. I think that is due to the fact that most believe we will get beat up in the Rose Bowl.

Last year and the 2 MNC games, I really believed we would win those games. I had no doubt. But, I have serious doubts that we will win the Rose Bowl. Historically the Big Ten has some problems travelling all the way out there and winning. And JT's track record lately is not very good.

I hope I am wrong and I would love to eat crow and have OSU win the Rose Bowl in dominating fashion. Hell, I'd ask for seconds of that crow. I just don't see it happening. Call me pessimistic, but this is my opinion.

First of all, I think it is impossible to predict how a coach 20 years or so removed from the sidelines would do, or when he would be fired if he were coaching today. Apples and oranges are usually impossible to accurately compare. I do know that Coach Cooper's record at Ohio State was outstanding, except for the most important statistic, namely the head to head Michigan record. Coach Tressel is one of the premier coaches in the nation and has the record to more than substantiate that ranking, but now, all of a sudden, the Michigan record isn't important and it has become the "Big Game" record that seems to have taken over the lime light. I still like the man as our head coach and while we all have our differences with coaches and their game decisions, I just wish I had been 1/10th as successful in my chosen career as Coach Tressel has been in his. What if his team wins the Rose Bowl and wins his sixth consecutive Big Ten Title next year? My guess is it still won't be good enough for the most avid of the Tressel haters out there.

Coop couldn't beat Michigan because he had the wrong approach to coaching that game. He tried to treat it like every other game. Tress treats it like the biggest game on earth. That's why we've been so successful in it.

I don't think Tress should be fired. This same discussion has been going on for the last 5 some odd years, but we've been in 5 straight BCS games, in BCS games 7 out of his 9 years here, and we're going back to the Rose Bowl. Now, with the BCS that doesn't seem to mean a whole lot, but I think Rose Bowl Team and OSU have a pretty special meaning to each other.

I hate 80% of OSU fans.
