Duke's Olek Czyz Transfers to Nevada

  • Prescott
...Ex-Reno High standout Olek Czyz will transfer from Duke to Nevada and enroll in classes for the spring semester, Czyz wrote in a text to the RGJ on Tuesday.

Czyz will be eligible to begin practicing with the team next week and can begin playing for the Wolf Pack after the fall semester next season. He has 2½ years of eligibility remaining..

There seems to be a pattern of transfers from duke. Wonder why?

Did you check this out, prescott?

This is a non-issue. But, for ahdonis, it's understandable why a second thread on this topic would be created. Both by him.

    As for Duke's recent transfers:

Elliot Williams transfered a year ago to be close to his ailing mother. Williams has repeatedly stated that he wished it could have worked out in Durham, but that it was important for him to be close to his mother, not knowing how many more months, weeks or even days she had left.

Taylor King left due to his unwillingness to work on D and his lack of patience. He wanted to play more in the backcourt, in the three spot. That wasn't happening with Gerald Henderson, Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith all on the wing. He was going to spell Singler or Thomas at the four, and that's it. He knew that coming in. But he didn't like it. Now he's in Philly. I'm glad he's doing well there. It means he's decided to let go of his baggage (and perhaps his cigarettes?) and work.

Olek Czyz, as has been said before, was never recruited to be a star. He was brought in as four-year guy who had the potential of turning into a solid reserve as an upperclassmen. He understood this. After getting a taste of college ball, however, it seems as if he would rather be on a team where he could contribute more and do some bigger things. I say good for him. He's a tough kid with a tremendous work ethic -- and is probably the best leaper in the country. He'll have a chance to be a nice player over the next couple of years at Nevada. He has a solid foundation to grow from now that he's spent two years under the tutelage of the Duke staff.

Is that why Kentucky was considered?
Taylor King left due to his unwillingness to work on D and his lack of patience.
I'm sorry .I didn't know that you were one of Taylor's confidants.

Get real!! You have no idea why King left and you are just offering conjecture, as usual.

More conjecture. You are nothing if not consistent.

Why no insight on Eric Boateng and Jamal Boykin???

Almost anything anyone says here is conjecture. This is an internet chat board. You get real!!!

Elliot left because of the situation with his mother. Fact.

Taylor King was unwilling to work at other facets of his game not named three-point shooting, and did not like playing the position that he was stuck in. He was very difficult in terms of his attitude for some reason while in Durham, and that may have been because he never really meshed well with the team. Not conjecture. I have very reliable sources close to the Duke program that provided me with this information while I was staying in Durham in the summer of '08. Believe me when I tell you that King was not a fit at Duke based on the above reasons.

Olek was NEVER considered a star, no matter what you think or his rankings suggested. Czyz was always going to be of the unrefined, four-year role player mold. His rankings coming out of high school were over-inflated because of who he signed with. This tends to happen at places like Duke and North Carolina from time to time. While I don't know for sure about Olek's reasoning for leaving, I don't think it's too far fetched to believe that he wants to play a bigger part on someone else's team. It's understandable.

You try too hard. And you're not fooling anyone.

Also, did you get a chance to read that link on John Thompson III's Georgetown club, which has seen five transfers in the last three years?

What is going on there! Better start a thread and start the investigation!

This is somewhat true, but it isn't passed off as factual. That is the difference.SomEtimes, you remind me of the guy who had sources in THE TRIANLGE.

I am not going to comment on this because I don't know all of the facts. I do know that things are not always as they seem.
Olek was NEVER considered a star, no matter what you think or his rankings suggested.
That just isn't true. Many major D1 schools had him on their radar. It is good to see that duke took care of his injured knee.

I guess Jay Wright motivated him. He looks leaner and meaner in a Nova uniform.

didnt duke even petition the ncaa to try and waive the 1 year rule in williams' case?
  • georgemc80
Good Luck to him. The kid realized he was not going to be able to fulfill his dreams at Duke. Its not a problem with the program or coach....so its really a non-issue.

I don't see a negative pattern with these transfers....I don't believe any true star talent has transferred. Please enlighten me. Basically...give me an argument on how this has been a negative.

Luke Babbitt and Armon Johnson are a very good duo for Nevada. Combine Czyz with IU transfer Malik Story eligible next year the Wolfpack should be strong. A lot will depend on if those guys stay in school though, Babbitt and Johnson.

Did you read the Georgetown story, prescott? Why haven't you started examining the situation there!?!
  • Prescott
It looks like JT III has some issues to deal with. Defections are usually not a good thing.

I won't hazard a guess as to why this is happening at Georgetown. I'll leave that bit of conjecture up to you.

I love it when Duke and NC are both mediocre!!

Duke is not mediocre. The Blue Devils are 14-2, with dominating wins over (15) Connecticut, (17) Gonzaga and (20) Clemson already this season and are winners of eight of their last nine games by 28 points per. In its 14 victories this season, Duke is winning by an average of 36.5 PPG.

Behind NPOTY candidate Jon Scheyer (and he is a NPOTY candidate according to the people who matter, so save the BS about him), Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith, along with a blossoming cast of freshman and big men in the Plumlee brothers, Duke is a very good team that could prove to be incredibly dangerous by the end of the year if the progression continues.

At the very least, this is an ACC champion caliber club. Don't be a blockhead.

    It's 2005 again.

Scheyer is one notch above Jon Diebler. Couldnt hold Evan Turner's jock strap!!!

duke is 0-2 in the two road games they have played. Let's wait until they play some road games before crowning them the champion.

I said Duke has, at the very least, an ACC champion-caliber club. No one here has called Duke the outright ACC champion. Please tell me you think Duke has an ACC championship-caliber team, prescott? If you don't believe so, you're not as smart as I thought.

    rec,

In the past 5 years or so, duke's goal is to win the ACC tournament, not the NCAA tournament. They have been very successful in this quest. If duke's play away from derm is any indication, they will continue this impressive pattern.
  • georgemc80
ignorant statement......at least the goal part anyways...

WTF? Where did you read this? I'm going to be pissed the hell off if Duke's staff hasn't been wanting national championships.. Just another reason why we've slipped into mediocrity.
slidepiece wrote:If duke's play away from derm is any indication, they will continue this impressive pattern.
Duke has lost two road games on the year (in two attempts). I might remind you, however, that Duke lost to Wisconsin in Madison, where the Badgers are 163-16 all-time and 10-0 on the year to date, and to ranked Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

Carolina, meanwhile, is 0-4 on the road this season, including a loss at the College of Charleston.

Now I've read some funny shit here, but this one takes the cake! LOL
