Garrett Gilbert, the gawky 18-year-old. Should I be the one to say it? That instead of running up the score, Mack Brown should've gotten his backup QB some reps this year?
    Discuss.

(I don't think it's that simple, but since it's already out there in the serious business that is the internet, I figured I would post it)
I agree with you, that it's really not that simple. I would say OSU blew some opponents out this year, and there was plenty of opportunity for Bauserman to play a few minutes, but he didn't, because Pryor needs game reps.

I feel that Texas can't expect an injury, so why not give McCoy more and more game reps during blowouts?
Why would you give McCoy more reps? If it is a blowout, you have to get your younger players in for some reps. You don't expect an injury, but you must prepare for it and Texas didn't do that and it cost them a chance at a title.

The only reason I can see keeping McCoy in is to increase his stats for the Heisman. He is a senior, your comparison of keeping him in to keeping Pryor in (a sophomore) is not a ver good one IMO.

On a positive side, I feel that Gilbert read the defense and the blitz's better than Terrelle Pryor has thus far. Impressive performance for just being thrust into the game.

Garrett Gilbert will be a very qb in the future, he really was put into a tough situation last night.

Gilbert is a stud. He played very well outside of 2-3 throws.

I think this game showed that the Texas defense wasn't too far off of the Bama defense. They hung right with them for the whole game while having Bama get outstanding field position all day.

that kid has to catch the shovel but what should have happened was Texas take a knee and go into halftime only down 11.

He looked awful when he first started out and I thought he was going to have a meltdown after he threw the pick on the shovel pass. But all in all, he did impress me at the end. You can tell he's going to be good. Even though towards the end of the game I still had to scratch my head a little bit at a couple of his throws. His WRs definitely didn't help. Shipley had a nice statistical game but left alot passes on the field and was it Malcolm Williams? I think it was #9, can't remember. But that guy is probably being torched down in Austin

I was impressed with Gilbert considering he is a true freshman and hadn't seem hardly any PT until last night.

    the kid did okay--his receivers,with the exception of Shipley,were another story--especially #9

Just a tough situation for him to be thrown in to... you can tell he really settled down in the second half... good fight from the Longhorns as a whole, it would have been really easy to just throw in the towel after that first half but they fought back and made it a game...looks like Texas has its quarterback of the future.

I think it's much like a baptism of fire for this kid. Even though Texas lost last night, they've won huge in the future. Next year, they were looking at starting a kid, Gilbert, with very little experience, until McCoy got hurt that is. Now, next year, they have a kid who has some experience in the national title game against one of the best defenses starting for them. That's absolutely huge.

Even though it'll take a bit longer to develop fully, last night helped Gilbert a whole ton. While playing Oklahoma next year, he'll have already played in a big game instead of that being his first big game ever as a Texas QB. He played fantastic once he settled down, and Texas is very lucky for the future with this kid.

This kid is going to be a stud and will compete for a Heisman before he's done

His WR's did not help him. But, I do not think he is the next great at Texas.

I think he looks like he has a lot of potential.

Reminded me of a Ryan Malletl (just not quite as strong of an arm).
